Whole Number 97
In the June 1972 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 78, we published an article entitled "Further Data on Descendants of David Sparks (1785-1861) of Hendricks County, Indiana." The article stated that, according to census data, David Sparks (17851861) of Hendricks County, Indiana, and his wife, Elizabeth (Roberts) Sparks, had (among other children) a daughter who was born between 1815 and 1820 whose name was not known. A descendant of David and Elizabeth Sparks, Mrs. Esther Coons, Brownsburg, Indiana, has found additional data about the family of David Sparks which identifies this daughter.
Mrs. Coons says that while she was sorting some pictures of her mother she came across an envelope marked "Sparks Records." In it were some torn and ragged pages from a family Bible. At the end of the last page was written, "When I'm dun with this Bible [ it ] belongs to A. 0. Sparks. March 9, 1880." It was signed by Thomas J. Sparks. The records were as follows:
David Sparks born March 16, 1785
Elizabeth Sparks born 1790
Rebecca Login Sparks born January 30, 1813, daughter of David and Elizabeth Sparks
Nancy Sparks born January 2, 1815, daughter of David and Elizabeth Sparks
Gaillin Sparks was born September 12, 1816, son of David and Elizabeth Sparks
Nicyan Sparks born October 25, 1818, daughter of David and Elizabeth Sparks
Thomas John Chilton Sparks born July 5, 1822
Nicy Ann Sparks (or "Nicyan") named above was the unknown daughter of David and Elizabeth (Roberts) Sparks. She was enumerated as born between 1815 and 1820 on the 1820 census of Pulaski County, Kentucky, and on the 1830 census of Hendricks County, Indiana, in the listing of the family of David Sparks. She married Nathaniel Helton in Hendricks County on November 8, 1838. Apparently she died prior to 1850, for when the census of Hendricks County was taken that year, Nathaniel Helton, age 38, was listed with his wife, Cynthia P. Helton, age 26, and two small sons, John W. Helton, age 4, and Jehiel T. Helton, age 2.
