SPARKS FAMILIES IN ALABAMA - 1830 CENSUS

by William Perry Johnson

In 1817 the eastern half of the Territory of Mississippi was formed into the Territory of Alabama, and in 1819 Alabama became a state. The city of Mobile was founded in 1702 by a French Canadian named Jean Baptiste La Moyne. During the Revolutionary War British sympathizers from Georgia settled in the Alabama section, and they were soon followed by planters from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. In the early 1800's many pioneers from Tennessee settled in the northern part of the State. All other sections were soon settled from nearby states and territories.

The 1820 census is missing for the entire State of Alabama. The 1830 census is complete for the 36 counties in Alabama at that time. These 36 counties were: Autauga, Baldwin, Bibb, Blount, Butler, Clarke, Conecuh, Covington, Dale, Dallas, Fayette, Franklyn, Greene, Henry, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lowndes, Madison, Marengo, Marion, Mobile, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Saint Clair, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Washington, and Wilcox.

In 1830 there were Sparks families living in 11 of the 36 counties, as follows: (The number following each name is the page number).
