SPARKS FAMILIES ENUMERATED ON THE 1830 CENSUS OF GEORGIA
In the September, 1971, issue of the Quarterly (Whole No. 75) pp. 1432-1433, we published a list of the Sparks families that were enumerated on the 1820 census of Georgia. Here we publish a list of the Sparks families appearing on the 1830 census of Georgia.
In all federal census records prior to 1850, only the name of the head of the household was given. Opposite each name, the members of the household, including the head, were enumerated by sex and by age group. In the 1830 census, males and females were divided into thirteen age categories. We may assume that in most households, the man listed by name as the head of that household was the oldest male enumerated and that the oldest female enumerated was his wife, but one cannot always be sure. Likewise, those members of the household younger than the head were usually his children, but in some instances apprentices, orphaned neighbor children, and relatives were also counted as members of the family. Where a woman is named as the head, we can usually assume that she was a widow.
The census taker ordinarily recorded whatever data he was told by the person at home on the day he stopped. Ages were often estimated while some members of the household might be overlooked. Sometimes parents included sons or daughters who were no longer living at home and who were thus counted again in another household. If a married son was living at home, he might be listed as head of the family even though his father was actually in charge - - whether father or son was so designated sometimes depended on who talked to the census taker.
The page number of the volume in which the name appears is given in the following record in parentheses after the name. This information is sometimes significant as an indication whether two different families were living near each other.
