SPARKS FAMILIES LISTED ON THE 1830 CENSUS OF VIRGINIA

In a previous issue of the Quarterly we published records of Sparks households that appeared on the 1810 and the 1820 Virginia censuses. Both were published in the September 1967 issue (Whole No. 59, pp. 1090 -1093). In the issue for September 1974 (Whole No. 88, p. 1790) additions to the 1810 census were provided from tax lists, nearly 20 county census records for 1810 having been lost.

As has been explained in previous issues of the Quarterly, a federal census has been taken every ten years since 1790. Until 1850, however, only the head of each household was recorded by name. The rest of the household was simply enumerated by sex and age group. The introduction to the 1830 census of Georgia, appearing on page 1880 of the March 1977 issue of the Quarterly, may prove helpful in interpreting the record which follows.

In comparing the list of Sparks families appearing on the 1820 census with that of 1830, it is interesting to note that, whereas in 1820 there were 23 Sparks households, the number in 1830 was only 17. This decrease can probably b e accounted for by the westward migration that took place between 1820 and 1830.

It should be kept in mind that until the Civil War, West Virginia was part Virginia. Sparks families were found in four counties in 1830, which, after 1863, have been part of West Virginia: Harrison County, Monongalia County, Nicholas County, and Preston County.
