THE FAMILY OF<br> JOSEPH MONROE SPARKS (1855-1911)


<hr> <p>In the <a href="../php/view_pages.php?article=UnionPensions-104#B5">Quarterly of December 1978 (Vol. XXVI, No. 4, Whole No. 104) pp. 2057- 60</a>, we published an abstract of the Civil War pension papers of <b>74. Coleman Sparks</b> who was born in South Carolina ca. 1826 and died on June 24, 1863, while in the Union Army. He had married <b>Louisa E. Goings (or Goins)</b> on 1 April 1849, at Calhoun, Georgia. They were living in the 12th Division of Gordon County,Georgia, when the 1850 census was taken. We believe, but have no proof, that Coleman Sparks was closely related to (perhaps a son of) Drury Sparks (born ca. 1795) who was originally from Union County, South Carolina, and who moved to Gordon County, Georgia, between 1840 and 1850.</p> <p>A record of the children of Coleman and Louisa E. (Goings) Sparks, taken from their family Bible, was part of the Civil War pension papers that we published,as noted above. One of the children listed was <b>74.4 Joseph Monroe Sparks</b>, born October 17, 1855.</p> <p>Sarah Henderson, Rt. 7, Hester Heights, Russellville, Alabama (35653) has written to us regarding the family of this Joseph Monroe Sparks, who seems to have been known under the middle name Monroe. He married <b>Emma Daily</b>, daughter of <b>John and Elizabeth (Sherryl) Daily</b>, on August 7, 1876. Between 1880 and 1900 they moved from Colbert County, Alabama, to Lawrence County in the same state. He died on February 11, 1911, and was buried in Kings Cemetery on Highway 20 in Lawrence County, Alabama. Emma (Daily) Sparks died June 26, 1941.</p> <p>They had the following children: <blockquote> <p><b>74.4.1 Isom G. Sparks</b>, born 1877; he died in August 1966. He married <b>Amy Yocum</b> who died February 20, 1946. They had children named</p> <blockquote> <p><b>74.4.1.1 Jessie Sparks</b>,<br> <b>74.4.1.2 Mary Emma Sparks</b>,<br> <b>74.4.1.3 Louise Sparks</b>, and<br> <b>74.4.1.4 Jack Sparks</b>. </p> </blockquote> <p><b>74.4.2 John Coleman Sparks</b>, born 1880; he died on April 14, 1932. He was married twice, first to <b>Zula -----</b> who was born in 1884, and second to <b>Lillian Brewer</b>. He had no children.</p> <p><b>74.4.3 Rhoda Ann Sparks</b>, born 1883. She married <b>James Yocum</b> and had a daughter named <b>Annie May</b>. <p><b>74.4.4 Leander Alonzo Sparks</b> (twin of Huston) was born March 14, 1886, and died March 26, 1965. He lived at Hillsboro, Lawrence County, Alabama. He married <b>Willie Grace King</b>, born May 3, 1891, daughter of <b>Haney and Sarah (Fike) Hargett</b>.
