SPARKS FAMILIES LISTED ON THE 1840 CENSUS OF LOUISIANA
When the federal census of 1840 was taken, the state of Louisiana was divided into 37 parishes (a Louisiana parish is no different from a county in other states). There were Sparks (including Spark) families living in eight of these 37 parishes.
The census taker in 1840 was instructed to record households in exactly the same manner as in 1830. Only the name of the head of the household or family was recorded; all other members were simply enumerated, first by sex then by age group. Individuals employed by the family were usually counted along with actual family members. Whoever happened to be home that day reported to the census taker the information that he requested. On occasion, if no one was home or the census taker was reluctant to travel to a remote residence, information might be supplied by a neighbor. Occasional errors were unavoidable - - ages were sometimes miscalculated, the name of the family head might be misspelled, and, occasionally, a family was missed altogether. Despite these shortcomings, census records constitute a most important source for genealogical research.
