(Editor's Note: This is a continuation of the article begun in the March 1974 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 85. In that issue, we presented a brief sketch of the life of 44. Isaac Sparks, Sr. (ca. 1740-ca. 1815) of Estill County, Kentucky, and five of his children and their descendants:

Here we present data on the remainder of his children, Isaac, Jr., Thomas, James, and Peggy. Readers interested in this Estill County, Kentucky, branch of the family should note that a large portion of the September 1973 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 83 was devoted to records of the Sparks family of Estill County. Many details regarding Isaac Sparks, Sr., given in the September 1973 issue were not repeated in the March 1974 issue.)
44.6 Isaac Sparks, Jr., son of Isaac and Catherine Sparks, was born between 1784 and 1794 according to the 1810 census of Estill County, but since he paid taxes on himself as being age 21 or above in Clark County in 1804, he most probably was born ca. 1783. His place of birth has not been resolved. A daughter stated, according to the 1880 census of Lee County, Kentucky, that both of her parents were born in Virginia, but other children of Isaac Sparks, Jr., stated to their 1880 census taker that he was born in Kentucky. He died ca. 1846 in Estill County.
Isaac Sparks, Jr., paid taxes in Estill County from 1808 until 1827, but by 1829 he was living in Madison County on Indian Creek, a tributary of the Rockcastle River. This part of Madison County became a part of Jackson County when it was created in 1858. Isaac Sparks, Jr., was listed on the 1830 census of Madison County, but he was back in Estill County in 1840.
44.6 Isaac Sparks, Jr., was married twice. His first marriage was to Annis McGuire in Estill County on March 8, 1809, with Abner Wiseman as his bonds man. (Actually the license was issued on that date, but it was not returned until September 18, 1810.) (M.B. A, page 2, and M.B. 2, page 32) Annis McGuire was a daughter of William McGuire, for at the August term of the Estill County Court in 1808, as an "infant orphan of William McGuire" she chose Abner Wiseman as her guardian. She was born ca. 1790. Isaac and Annis (McGuire) Sparks had four children:

Annis (McGuire) Sparks apparently died between 1816 and 1820. Isaac Sparks, Jr., married, second, to Frances Crawford ca. 1822. She was born ca. 1801, a daughter of Joseph Crawford. To the marriage of Isaac and Frances, eleven children were born:

As stated above, 44.6 Isaac Sparks, Jr., died ca. 1846. He left no will; however, a Jackson County Court record, along with census data, confirms his children as named above. The court order was recorded on page 410, Deed Book 1, November 11, 1863. According to an abstract, Henry Faubus, a court appointed commissioner, acting for Barnett Sparks, the plaintiff, conveyed to Barnett Sparks, 75 acres of land on the War Fork of Station Camp Creek in which the other heirs of Isaac Sparks, deceased, had an interest.

Woodson Horn and wife, 44.6.12 Mary Jane (Sparks) Horn.44.6.1 William Sparks, son of Isaac and Annis (McGuire) Sparks, was born ca. 1810 in Estill County. He paid taxes in that county from 1834 to 1850. On August 11, 1829, he married Hannah Skinner in Estill County. She was a daughter of Courtland and Hannah (Reed) Skinner who were married in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1793. Hannah (Skinner) Sparks apparently died between 1843 and 1849. Children of William and Hannah Sparks were:
44.6.1.1 Levi Sparks, son of William and Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, was born November 9, 1832, and died November 21, 1919. He lived and died on the Levi Sparks Branch of Station Camp Creek in Estill County. In 1856, he married Cyntha Ann Flynn, a daughter of Levi and Jane (Fowler) Flynn. Cyntha Ann was born February 15, 1831, and died March 3, 1913. Both Levi and Cyntha Ann are buried in the Sparks Cemetery on the hill that overlooks the old Sparks homeplace. (A photograph of Levi and Cyntha Ann (Flynn) Sparks appears on the cover of this issue of this Quarterly.)
Roberta "Robin" Seibel, a great-granddaughter of 44.6.1.1 Levi and Cyntha Ann Sparks, has written a description of this couple that is quite appealing. She wrote: "Levi was a farmer whose 4 a.m. hog call distressed some, amused others and woke everyone for some distance.
I think something special should be said for this couple whose hearts and home harbored so many orphans, lonely oldsters, and anyone who had a need. They hosted so many weddings, I stopped counting. One cannot talk about them to anyone who remembers them without recognizing that these were two very special people, genuinely loved and admired by all. Children loved to play pranks on "Uncle Levi." Young people enjoyed the happy times and the music and laughter that filled their house. Old folks found a haven of comfort in their family circle. Levi Flynn, a nephew of Cyntha Ann, is not a tall man and he said the reason he is short is because he couldn't keep his feet still when the Sparkses got out their fiddles, banjos, and accordions, and he wore himself down from dancing." Children of Levi and Cyntha Ann (Flynn) Sparks were:
44.6.1.1.1 William ["Little Willie"] Sparks, born June 10, 1858. He died when a small child.
44.6.1.1.2 Ansil Daniel Sparks, born April 14, 1860, in Estill County, and died. January 30, 1945, in Indiana. He was obviously named for Dr. Ansil Daniel, a well-known physician of Estill County. Dr. Daniel was born ca. 1801 and practiced medicine for a lifetime; he was still making house calls in a buggy at age 82. His life touched the lives of many citizens of Estill County, including those of the of the Sparks families. On January 13, 1881, Ansil Daniel Sparks married Julie Caroline Bolin, daughter of Milam and Nancy (Trent) Bolin. (Estill Co. M.B. 1871-87, page 288) Julie Caroline was born January 30, 1862, in Tennessee and she died August 12, 1946. Ansil Sparks was nearly six feet tall while Julie was not quite four and one-half feet tall.

44.6.1.1.2.1 William Jefferson 'Willie" Sparks, born March 22, 1882, in Estill County and died in 1960. He married Edith McClain and they had eight children.
44.6.1.1.2.2 Robie Sparks, born January 15, 1884, and died March 3, 1962. He married Goldie Harrison and they had three children, including 44.6.1.1.2.2.x Roberta "Robin" (Sparks) Seibel who has been so helpful in the preparation of this article.
44.6.1.1.2.3 Molly Sparks, born February 21, 1886, and died in infancy.
44.6.1.1.2.4 Rosa Sparks, born May 25, 1887, in Estill County. She died in 1969 in Indiana. She married Robert Andis and they had two children.
44.6.1.1.2.5 Cornelious "Neal" Sparks, born April 7, 1890, and died in 1969. He never married.
44.6.1.1.2.6 Marvella Sparks, born February 4, 1892, died November 19, 1894.
44.6.1.1.2.7 Ola "Jack" Sparks, born March 5, 1899, in Johnson County, Indiana, and died February 14, 1970. She was a cousin of Julie Bolin, wife of Ansil Daniel Sparks. Jeff and Marvella Sparks had the following children:
44.6.1.1.4.1 Myrtle Sparks, born January 2, 1894. She married Frank Clem and lives (1974) at Walton, Indiana. They had four children.
44.6.1.1.4.2 Charles Foster Sparks, born February 17, 1895, and died April 2, 1921. He never married.
44.6.1.1.4.3 Bessie Sparks, born October 13, 1896. She lives in Indiana.
44.6.1.1.4.4 Cecil Sparks, born ca. 1898. He married Opal Craig and they had two children.
44.6.1.1.4.5 James West Sparks, born December 9, 1899. He married Mildred Oldham and they had five children. They live in Indiana.
44.6.1.1.4.6 Julie May Sparks, born October 15, 1901. She married Homer Hall and they had two children. She is buried in Ohio.After the death of his wife, Marvella (Pratt) Sparks, 44.6.1.1.4 Jeff Sparks married (second) Zoda Gentry in 1903 in Estill County. She was born March 25, 1882, and died in 1969 in Indiana. She was reared by Levi and Cyntha Ann (Flynn) Sparks. To the union of Jeff and Zoda (Gentry) Sparks were born:
44.6.1.1.4.7 Homer Sparks, born ca. 1904. He died in infancy.
44.6.1.1.4.8 Flora Sparks, born May 27, 1906. She married 44.6.8.5.9 David Sparks. He was a son of 44.6.8.5 John Grandison Sparks, grandson of 44.6.8 Daniel Crawford Sparks, and a greatgrandson of 44.6 Isaac Sparks, Jr. They had two children.44.6.1.1.4.9 Raymond Sparks, born July 2, 1908. He married Lillie Bird and they had three children.
44.6.1.1.4.10 Showie May Sparks, born October 6, 1910. She married Robert Ripberger and they had two children.

Crank at the home of her father in Estill County. Her brother, Ansil Daniel Sparks, was a witness. (M.B. 1871-87, page 932)

44.6.2.1.7 Mary Jane Fowler was born ca. 1857. She was a daughter of 44.6.2.1 Isaac and Edith (Lakes) Fowler, and a granddaughter of Jeremiah Fowler and 44.6.2 Mary "Polly" (Sparks) Fowler. (See page 1652 of this Quarterly, Whole No. 86.) Her grandmother, 44.6.2 Mary "Polly" (Sparks) Fowler, was a daughter of 44.6 Isaac and Annis (McGuire) Sparks of Estill County.
44.6.2.1.7 Mary Jane Fowler, first wife of James R. Crank, was thus a second cousin of 44.6.1.1.5 Hannah J. Sparks, the second wife of James R. Crank.
Mary Jane (Fowler) Crank bore five children to James R. Crank before her death in 1884 or 1885. These children were named

Hannah and James Crank had the following children:
44.6.1.1.5.6 Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Crank, born September 1886. He married Josie Carter and they had eleven children. In 1970 they had 26 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Jeff Crank is a minister and lives in Ohio (1973).
44.6.1.1.5.7 Levi Crank. He died in childhood.
44.6.1.1.5.8 Cyntha Ann Crank, born in 1891 and died in 1961. In January 1906 she married James Cox at the.home of her grandfather, 44.6.1.1 Levi Sparks, in Estill County. 44.6.7.8.x James Cox was a son of 44.6.7.8 Nancy Ann (Sparks) Cox, a grandson of 44.6.7 John G. Sparks (see below) and a great-grandson of 44.6 Isaac Sparks, Jr. Cyntha Ann and James were parents of six children.
44.6.1.1.5.9 Bertha Crank; she married Thomas Powell and died at age 17.
44.6.1.1.5.10 Leonard Crank; he married (first) Nancy Winkle and (second) Betty Marcum. There were children born to both marriages.
44.6.1.1.5.11 Pearl Crank, born November 24, 1899. She married David Allen. She had one daughter.44.6.1.1.6 Levi F. "Squire" Sparks, born ca. 1872. He married Lucy Ann Crawford and they had five children, all of whom live in or near Irvine, Kentucky.
44.6.1.1.6.1 Eli Sparks. He married (first) FNU Stevens and (second) FNU Tipton. He had fourteen children.
44.6.1.1.6.2 Maud Sparks. She married Millard Eve and they had several children.
44.6.1.1.6.3 Daniel Sparks. He died at age 17.
44.6.1.1.6.4 Sarah Sparks. She married James Plummer and they had four children.
44.6.1.1.6.5 Gardner Sparks. He married Lilly Estes.44.6.1.2 Annis Sparks, daughter of William and Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, was born ca. 1833 in Madison County, Kentucky. On January 26, 1854, she married John Blanton at the home of her brother, Levi Sparks, in Estill County. (M.B. 1854-71, page 10) She and her husband, John Blanton, had three children:
44.6.1.2.1 Lucinda Blanton was born October 4, 1854. On July 13, 1870, she married John Parsons Miller, a son of John and Malinda (Repass) Miller. Lucinda (Blanton) Miller is buried on the old Miller farm in Estill County. She and John had nine children:
44.6.1.2.1.1 Pleasant Green Miller was born October 24, 1871, and died on January 20, 1967. He is buried in Shelby County, KY. He was married three times. The first marriage was to Mollie D. Rogers and they had a son,
44.6.1.2.1.1.1 Edward Conroy "Roy" Miller. Roy Miller married Bessie Stout.
After the death of his first wife, Pleasant married Betty Davidson and they had one son,
44.6.1.2.1.1.2 Frank Miller, who married Kitty McGuire.
The second marriage ended in divorce and Pleasant Miller married (third) Emma Thurman. To this union two children were born:
44.6.1.2.1.1.3 Mildred Miller who married the Rev. Bailey Davis, a Baptist minister, and
44.6.1.2.1.1.4 Clarence L. Miller, who married Katherine Barrickman. Pleasant Green Miller always said that he was named for a church (now defunct) in Bourbon County, KY, known as the "Pleasant Green Church in the Bluegrass." He served as a commissioner of prohibition in Kentucky and Tennessee and was also with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.44.6.1.2.1.2 Clarence Miller was a graduate of Centre College and an attorney. He served in the Kentucky Legislature for several terms and was also State Commissioner of Finance. He never married.
44.6.1.2.1.3 William Miller married (first) Minnie Lisle and they had a son,
44.6.1.2.1.2.1 Glenn Miller.
William married (second) Ardith MNU and they had two children:
44.6.1.2.1.2.2 Gordon Miller and
44.6.1.2.1.2.3 Arlene Miller.Like his brother, Clarence, William Miller served in the Kentucky Legislature. He was also clerk of Allen County, KY. He was an Army captain in World War I.
44.6.1.2.1.4 Daniel Miller was a Spanish-American War veteran and lived in Irvine, KY. He married but had no children.
44.6.1.2.1.5 Harry Miller married FNU Douglas and had several children, including a son,44.6.1.2.1.5.1 Douglas Miller, who married Hallie Underwood. Harry Miller, too, served in the Kentucky Legislature.
44.6.1.2.1.6 Eva Miller married William Polk and had a daughter,
44.6.1.2.1.6.1 Myrtle Lee Polk, who married Gilbert Neal.
44.6.1.2.1.7 James Miller was born March 4, 1882. He went to Arizona where he died on December 1, 1914. He never married.
44.6.1.2.1.8 Lydia Miller married Chester Gourley. They had no children and after their divorce, Chester married Lydia's sister, Virginia Miller.
44.6.1.2.1.9 Virginia Miller married Chester Gourley.44.6.1.2.2 Malinda Blanton, daughter of John and Annis (Sparks) Blanton, was born ca. 1857. She married John Gum and they had a family but we we have been able to learn nothing about their children.
44.6.1.2.3 Annis Blanton, daughter of John and Annis (Sparks) Blanton, was born ca. 1859. She never married.
44.6.1.3 Jeremiah Sparks, son of William and Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, was born on July 1, 1835, and died on October 8, 1905 in Jackson County, Kentucky. He is buried in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery at McKee, Kentucky. He enlisted October 10, 1861, at Estill Springs, Kentucky, in Company G, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Foot Volunteers, United States Array and received a medical discharge on May 22, 1862, at Murphreesboro, Tennessee. He almost lost his eye-sight when struck down by a typhoid epidemic that ran through his regiment and took the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. He also suffered from permanently impaired lungs. He was 5 feet, 11 inches tall and had blue eyes, fair hair, and a fair complexion according to his application for a pension. On January 17, 1856, in Madison County, Jeremiah Sparks married Sarah ["Sally"] Morris, daughter of Vincent W. Morris. Levi Sparks, brother of Jeremiah, attested to the consent of his father, William Sparks, to the marriage. (M.B. 2, page 93) Sally Morris was born in Clay County, Kentucky, on January 24, 1838, and died on February 13, 1920, in Jackson County. This couple lived on Doe Creek in Jackson County. They had twelve children:
44.6.1.3.1 John Riley Sparks, son of Jeremiah and Sally (Morris) Sparks, was born August 10, 1857. He married Amanda Gillum on October 17, 18811, in Estill County at the home of Milton Estes. Witnesses were R. W. Stancil and Marcus Thomas. (M.B. 1871-1887, page 374)
44.6.1.3.2 Vincent W. "Jeff" Sparks, son of Jeremiah and Sally (Morris) Sparks, was born November 26, 1858. He married Elizabeth Morris on March 25, 1880, in Jackson County. (M.B. 1858-1896, page ) According to the Vital Records of Jackson County, they had a son,
44.6.1.3.2.1 S. E. Sparks, born December 1, 1904.
44.6.1.3.3 Elizabeth ["Eda Jane"] Sparks, born April 11, 1863. She harried Leander Nunn on August 14, 1879, at the home of her father in Jackson County. (N.B. 1858 -1896) Leander Nunn was a son of Russell and Esther Nunn. When the 1880 census was taken of Jackson County, Eda Jane and Leander had one son,
44.6.1.3.3.1 William R. Nunn, born in May 1880.
44.6.1.3.4 Armilda E. Sparks, born February 28, 1865. She married William H. Anderson on August 16, 1880, at the home of her father in Jackson County. (M.B. 1858 -1896)
44.6.1.3.5 Margaret Malinda Sparks, born January 25, 1867. She married Alexander Morris on January 2, 1884, at the home of her father in Jackson County. (M.B. 1858 -1896)
44.6.1.3.6 Isaac Canada Sparks, son of Jeremiah and Sally (Morris) Sparks, was born June 25, 1869. He became a successful horticulturist according to information we have received.
44.6.1.3.7 Merrill Sparks, son of Jeremiah and Sally (Morris) Sparks, was born April 4, 1872. He married Sarah Ann Dickson on February 19, 1891, in Jackson County, Kentucky. (M.H. 1858 -1896) She apparently died prior to 1904 because by that year, according to Vital Records of Jackson County, Merrill Sparks had married Rachel Harrison and had a son, 44.6.1.3.7.1 William T. Sparks.
44.6.1.3.8 Fanny Sparks, daughter of Jeremiah and Sally (Morris) Sparks, was born May 10, 1874. She married Samuel B. Welch on March 13, 1896, in Jackson County. (M.H. 1858 -1896) According to Vital Records of Jackson County, Fanny and Samuel Welch had at least two children:
Gloria M. Welch, is a great-granddaughter of Samuel E. and Fanny (Sparks) Welch. She has provided us with the following list of their children:
44.6.1.3.8.1 Floyd Welch, born December 20, 1897, died February 7, 1952.
44.6.1.3.8.2 John Welch (grandfather of Gloria M. Welch) was born March 29, 1900, in Jackson County, Kentucky. He married Anna Pearl Spurlock on September 11, 1914; daughter of Abner and Polly (Sparks) Spurlock. He died July 28, 1972.
44.6.1.3.8.3 Maude Welch, born November 1904.
44.6.1.3.8.4 Luther Welch.

44.6.1.4 Isaac Sparks, son of William and Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, was born ca. 1838 and died May 11, 1901. He enlisted July 3, 1863, at Irvine, Kentucky, in Company A, 47th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, U.S. Army, and was discharged in December 1864 at Lexington, Kentucky. He served as a company cook. He was 6 feet tall and had blue eyes, black hair, and a fair complexion according to his application for a Civil War pension. On March 1, 1860, Isaac Sparks married Sarah Sandlin in Jackson County with Kennada Sandlin as his bondsman. (M.B. 3, page 99) Sarah Sandlin was born ca. 1843 and apparently died ca. 1872. They lived on a 327-acre farm on Sand Lick in Jackson County. To this marriage the following children were born:

44.6.1.5 William Riley Sparks, son, was born ca. 1839 in Estill County. On August 2, 1861, Riley Sparks (as he was known) enlisted in Company H, 2nd Illinois Cavalry Volunteers, at Frederick, Schuyler County, Illinois. He was discharged on April 28, 1862, at Hickman, KY, because of a disability caused by illness of typhoid fever. According to his pension papers, he was 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed about 170 pounds. Riley Sparks was pensioned on January 13, 1891, and was living on his brother Jeremiah's farm in Jackson County, Kentucky. He died on July 4, 1892. (See Civil War Pension File No. 710513)
44.6.1.6 Eli Sparks, son of William and Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, was born April 6, 1841, and died on December 28, 1926, in Cherokee County, Oklahoma. He enlisted. on October 10, 1861, in Company G, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army. He re-enlisted on June 4, 1864, in Company C, 4th Ategiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army and was discharged on August 17, 1865. He was engaged in the Battle of Chickamauga, the Battle of Buzzards Roost, and the Raid through Alabama. He sustained injuries in the military service which caused some paralysis and impairment for the rest of his life.
Eli Sparks married (first) Jane Smith in February 1866 in Jackson County and to that marriage two children were born:

44.6.1.6.2 Sarah Elizabeth Sparks, born September 26, 1868. She married FNU Robertson.Eli and Jane (Smith) Sparks were divorced and he left Jackson County in March 1869 and went to Arkansas where he settled at Combs. It was there at the home of William Carpenter that he was introduced to his second wife who was a widow, Ursula Jane (Salyer) Stewart. They were married on October 20, 1869, in Madison County, Arkansas, and lived, farmed, and reared a family a few miles from Combs, and it was there that Ursula died on April 29, 1913. Two children were born to Eli and Ursula Sparks.
44.6.1.6.3 Malinda Ann Sparks, born May 8, 1870, died May 16, 1958. She married (first) William Henry Faubus. He was born February 8, 1868, a son of Ellis and Biddie Ann (Parsley) Faubus. To this marriage were born eight children:
44.6.1.6.3.1 John Samuel ["Little Sam"] Faubus, was born October 2, 1887, at Combs. Arkansas. He was a very knowledgeable and well educated man; during his life he was a farmer, miner, railroader, and timber-worker. He was a member of the Church of Christ and he was a Democrat. He enjoyed writing poetry and was a good musicIan. In 1963, he wrote: "My grandfather, Eli Sparks, was born in Kentucky ca. 1840. I never knew where his family came from. His father was an abolitionist and grandfather joined the Union Army and served to the end of the war in 1865. He came to Arkansas in 1869 and was one of the best fiddlers I have ever known."
On December 24, 1908, "Little Sam" Faubus married Addie Joslin, a daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Thornbury) Joslin. To this union seven children were born, including Orval Eugene Faubus who became Governor of Arkansas in 1955, an office that he held for six terms. He was a popular executive and the first Governor of Arkansas to be elected more than three terms.

After the death of his wife, Ursula, in 1913, Eli Sparks married (third) Belle Duncan. There were no children born to this marriage. Eli Sparks finally moved to Cherokee County, Oklahoma., where he died on December 28, 1926.
44.6.1.7 Polly Ann Sparks, daughter of William and Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, was born ca. 1843. She married William Washington ["'Wash"] Lynch on June 15, 1864, in Estill County. (M.B. 1854 -71, page 30) She died in Arkansas.
After the death of his wife, Hannah (Skinner) Sparks, between 1843 and 1849, William Sparks (son of Isaac and Annis (McGuire) Sparks) married as his second wife Sarah ["Sally Ann"] Muck on May 2, 1850, in Estill County. (M.B. A, page 175) They moved to Owsley County where, according to the Vital Statistics of Owsley County, they had at least three children:

44.6.1.10 George W. Sparks was born December 20, 1854.On January 10, 1855, William and Sally Ann Sparks sold land on Station-Camp Creek in Estill County. A year later, on January 17, 1856, William gave consent to the marriage of his son, Jeremiah Sparks, to marry Sarah Morris. This is the last official record that we have found. Family tradition says he moved with his second family to Arkansas and that he became the father of triplets. No data have been found to support this.
44.6.2 Mary "Polly" Sparks, daughter of Isaac and Annis (McGuire) Sparks, was born ca. 1811. She married Jeremiah Fowler on April 14, 1825, in Estill County. (M.B. A, page 42) Jeremiah Fowler was born ca. 1802, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hill) Fowler. When the 1830 census was taken, Jeremiah and Polly were living in Madison County and had a son and daughter, but they were back in Estill County when the 1850 census was taken. 44.6.6 Joseph C. Sparks, son of Isaac and Frances (Crawford) Sparks, was born ca. 1825 and died on February 17, 1905. He enlisted on October 7, 1861, at Estill Springs, Kentucky, in Company K, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, United States Array and received a medical discharge on May 28, 1862, for disability incurred as a result of typhoid pneumonia. He suffered from permanent lung damage for the rest of his life. At age 55 he weighed only 135 pounds, and by age 60 he was described as "badly nourished, emaciated and palsied." His family physician, Dr. Ancil Daniel, stated in 1885: "He is a very poor man and in poor health since his return from the army." On December 27, 1879, Joseph C. Sparks appointed a neighbor, and probably a close kinsman, Lewis Sparks, to act in his behalf for a pension. (See Civil War Pension File No. 333,325) In his application for a pension, Joseph C. Sparks described himself at the time of his enlistment in 1861 as 6 feet tall, with blue eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion.
On March 12, 1846, 44.6.6 Joseph C. Sparks married Malinda Jane Barnes in Estill County. (M.B. A, page 152) She was born ca. 1828. They lived at Wagersville, Kentucky. They had ten children.
44.6.6.1 James J. Sparks, son of Joseph and Malinda Jane (Barnes) Sparks, was born January 12, 1847. His nickname was "Groundhog Jim." On December 27, 1866, he married Mary "Polly" Alcorn at the home of his father in Estill County. (M.B. 1854-71, page 45) Only one child was born to this union.

On September 17, 1889, she married 44.6.2.4.1 John Francis Lakes, son of William and Jane (Fowler) Lakes, in Lee County. The farm was covered with virgin timber, chestnut trees and a large orchard of old-fashioned apple trees.
4.6.6.5 Sarah Ann "Sally" Sparks was born June 4, 1856. She married Richard McKinney on December 22, 1877, in Estill County at the home of her brother, 44.6.6.1 James J. Sparks. (M.B. 1871 -87, page 198) She lived to be over 100.
4.6.6.6 Susan Reen Sparks was born October 4, 1858. She married Dave Robinson and they had at least one child. Susan Reen (Sparks) Robinson lived to be nearly 100.

4.6.6.7 William Joseph Sparks was born February 11, 1861. He married Nancy E. Robertson on February 22, 1883, in Estill County. (M.B. 1871-87, page 372) He was known as "Willie Joe."
4.6.6.8 Benjamin J. Sparks was born April 20, 1863. He married Louzain Hoover and they lived at Ross Creek, Kentucky.
4.6.6.9 Elijah Sparks was born January 8, 1867. He married Elizabeth White.
4.6.6.10 John R. Sparks was born April 24, 1870. He married Jane Hoover.44.6.7 John G. Sparks, son of Isaac and Frances (Crawford) Sparks, was born ca. 1827 and died on March 30, 1903. He enlisted on October 9, 1861, at Irvine, Kentucky, in Company D (later K), 8th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, United States Army, and received a medical discharge on October 27, 1862, at Nashville, Tennessee, for disability from "camp fever." He served as a musician. According to his pension papers, he was 5 feet, 6 inches tall and had blue eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. (See Civil War Pension File No. 333,1198.)
On August 2, 1849, 44.6.7 John G. Sparks married Mary Jane Murphy, a daughter of John and Catherine Murphy. (M.B. A, page 175) She was born ca. 1833 and died ca. 1898. John G. and Mary Jane (Murphy) Sparks lived at Sand Spring in Jackson County. On December 4, 1855, John and Catherine Murphy deeded 50 acres of land on the South Fork of Station Camp Creek, adjoining land already owned by 44.6.7 John G. Sparks, to 44.6.8.5 John Grandison Sparks in "consideration for love and affection for their son-in-law." (Estill County Deed Book K, page 355) John G. and Mary Jane (Murphy) Sparks had sixteen children:

Daniel and Lavina Sparks had the following children:

Sparks, a brother of Catherine (Sparks) White. Perhaps she was a daughter of Catherine and Thomas White.
44.6.12 Mary Jane Sparks, daughter of Isaac and Frances (Crawford) Sparks, was born ca. 1836 and died ca. 1880. She was a twin of Nancy Sparks who died in 1854 at the age of sixteen. (Vital Records of Estill County) On June 26, 1854, Mary Jane Sparks married Woodson Horn at the home of her widowed mother, Frances Sparks. Her brother, Daniel Sparks, was bondsman. (M.B. 1852-56, page 93) Woodson Horn was a brother of William Horn who had married Mary Jane Sparks's sister, Susannah, about a year earlier. According to the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Jackson County, Mary Jane and Woodson Horn had fourteen children. They were:

44.6.14 Isaac T. Sparks, son of Isaac and Frances (Crawford) Sparks, was born ca. 1838. On January 10, 1860, he married Angeline Alcorn in Estill County. She was born ca. 1835. According to the 1880 census of Jackson County, Isaac and Angeline Sparks had the following children:
44.6.14.1 Madison D. Sparks was born ca. 1861. He married Katy Holt on May 8, 1882.
44.6.14.2 Simpson Sparks was born ca. 1863. On May 17, 1881, he married Franky Ann Holt in Estill County. (M.B. 1871-87, page 316)
44.6.14.3 Isabel Sparks was born ca. 1869.
44.6.14.4 Sidney G. Sparks was born ca. 1872. On May 25, 1894, he married Ida Cox in Jackson County. (M.B. 1858-96) From information we have received, they had the following children (there were probably others):44.6.14.4.1 William Turner Sparks.

44.6.15 Solomon S. Sparks, son of Isaac and Frances (Crawford) Sparks, was born ca. 1843. On July 12, 1863, he married Rebecca Ann Horn in Estill County. She was a daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Wells) Horn. (M.B. 1854-71, page 24) Solomon S. and Rebecca Ann Sparks were the parents of at least five children (there may have been more):
44.6.15.1 Susan Sparks was born ca. 1865. She is probably the Emmaline Sparks who married Eli Fox in 1885.
44.6.15.2 Mary F. Sparks was born ca. 1867.
44.6.15.3 John W. Sparks was born ca. 1869. He was probably the John W. Sparks who married Milly Murphy in Jackson County on January 10, 1889. (M.B. 1858-96)44.6.15.4 Daniel G. Sparks, born ca. 1872. On October 24, 1895, he married Leannah Sparks, daughter of 44.6.14 Isaac and Angeline (Alcorn) Sparks (see above). They were married at the home of Daniel's father., in Jackson County. Witnesses were John Sparks, Isaac Sparks, and Sidney Sparks. (M.B. 1858-96)
44.6.15.5 Nancy J. Sparks was born ca. 1877. On January 26,1893, she married Isaac Fowler at her father's home in Jackson County. Witnesses were: Daniel Sparks and M. D. Alcorn. (M.B. 1858-96) Isaac Fowler was a son of Lewis and Nancy Jane (Sparks) Fowler and a grandson of 44.6.8 Daniel and Lavina (Carter) Sparks (see above).
44.7 Thomas Sparks, Sr., probably a son of Isaac and Catherine Sparks, was born ca. 1785 in Kentucky. When the estate of Isaac Sparks, Sr., was sold in 1815, he was one of the buyers. When the 1860 census was taken of Estill County, he stated that he was 75 years old, but his age was given as 87 when he died. in August 1870. (Vital Records of Estill County) He was exempted from paying taxes in Estill County in 1851 because of age and infirmity, thus he was about seventy years old in 1851.
We believe that Thomas Sparks was married twice, and perhaps three times. We do not know the name of the first wife, nor the year of marriage. She had apparently died prior to the taking of the 1810 Genus of Estill County, and Thomas Sparks was probably living with his parents and was one of the males aged 16 to 26 enumerated in that household. He married (we believe it was his second marriage) Dosha Thomas on November 16, 1812, in Estill County with John Stivers acting as his bondsman. (M.B. A, page 52) On August 7, 1826, Thomas Sparks married Polly Sparks in Estill County. (M.B. A, page 75) We believe that this Thomas Sparks may well have been the same Thomas Sparks who had married Dosha Thomas in 1812.
Apparently there were no children born to Thomas Sparks and Dosha Thomas and she died prior to 1820. When the 1820 census was taken of Estill County, Thomas Sparks was probably the male, age 26 to 45, living with his widowed mother, Caty Sparks. We do not think any children were born to the third marriage (see below).
Thomas Sparks paid taxes in Estill County from 1812 until he was exempted in 1851, but oddly enough, he was not listed on any census until 1860. On that census (1860) he was living with the family of Marion and Sarah Powell. Also living with the Powell family was James Crouch, age 63.
From the records we have found, we believe that 44.7 Thomas Sparks had at least two children, both of them by his first marriage. These children were:
44.7.1 Frances "Frankey" Sparks, probable daughter of Thomas Sparks, Sr., and his first wife, was born ca. 1800 according to the 1850 Estill County census. On October 28, 1824, she married James Crouch in Estill County. (M.B. A, page 40) When the 1830 census was taken, they had four children: a son, born ca. 1825, and two sons and a daughter, all born between 1825 and 1830.
On the 1850 census of Estill County, James and Frankey (Sparks) Crouch were listed as aged 53 years and 50 years, respectively. With them was a daughter, Sally Crouch, aged 20 years. Frankey Crouch apparently died prior to 1860, for when the census was taken that year, James Crouch was in the household of his son-in-law, Marion Powell, who had married Sally Crouch. Also in the same household (as mentioned above) was Thomas Sparks, age 75, whom we believe was the son of Isaac and Catherine Sparks and the grandfather of Sally (Crouch) Powell.
Frances "Frankey" (Sparks) Crouch and her husband, James Crouch, were the parents of at least four children, but we know the name of only one child:
44.7.1.1 A son was born ca. 1825

44.7.1.4 Sarah "Sally" Crouch was born ca. 1830. She married Marion Powell and, according to the 1860 census of Estill County, they were the parents of four children (there were probably others):44.7.1.4.1 James Powell, born ca. 1853
44.7.1.4.2 Jesse Powell, born ca. 1855
44.7.1.4.3 David Powell, born ca. 1857.
44.7.1.4.4 Franklin Powell, born ca. 1859.44.7.2 Thomas Sparks, Jr., probably son of Thomas Sparks, Sr., and his first wife (name unknown), was born ca. 1805. He was listed on every census of Estill County from 1830 to 1870. He paid taxes on land on White Oak Creek for the first time in 1825 where he was designated as "Thomas Sparks, Jr." Also paying taxes that year was Thomas Sparks, Sr. Thomas Sparks, Jr., died sometime between 1870 and 1880. (For further data on Thomas Sparks, Jr., our readers are invited to read pages 1400-1401 of the June 1971 issue of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 74. At that time, we speculated that 44.2.1.2 William Harrison Sparks (1834-1906) was a son of Thomas Sparks. We have since learned that William Harrison Sparks was a son of 44.2.1 John and Nancy (Eastis) Sparks (see the Quarterly of March 1974, Whole No. 85, page 1626).
On April 20, 1825, 44.7.2 Thomas Sparks, Jr., married Martha "Patsy" Powell in Estill County. (M.B.A, page 43) She may have been a daughter of Ambrose Powell who was living adjacent to Thomas and Patsy on the 1830 census, his age between 60 and 70 years. Patsy was born in Kentucky ca. 1809 and apparently died between 1860 and 1867. Thomas Sparks, Jr., left no will, but from census and other records, we believe that he and Patsy had the following family:
44.7.2.1 Elizabeth Sparks, daughter of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1826. She married John Shepherd and they had at least one child, a son, 44.7.2.1.1 Francis J. Shepherd, born April 16, 1856. (Vital Records of Estill County)
44.7.2.2 Son Sparks was born to Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks between 1825 and 1830 whom we cannot identify.
44.7.2.3 Sally A. Sparks was born ca. 1828. On November 24, 1851, she married Francis Crouch with her father acting as bondsman. (M.B. 1851-57, page 4) At least five children were born to this marriage.
44.7.2.3.1 Mary Jane Crouch, born July 11, 1853.
44.7.2.3.2 Thomas Crouch, born June 28, 1856.
44.7.2.3.3 James Crouch, born August 14, 1858.
44.7.2.3.4 Francis Crouch, born ca. 1864.
44.7.2.3.5 Sarah Crouch, born ca. 1867.44.7.2.4 John Sparks, son of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1830.
44.7.2.5 Polly Sparks was born ca. 1832. She is probably the Polly Sparks who married Henry Shepherd on September 21, 1854, in Estill County. (M.B. 1852-56, page 112) According to the 1860 census of Estill County, Henry and Polly Shepherd had the following children:
44.7.2.5.1 Susannah Shepherd, born ca. 1855.
44.7.2.5.2 John T. Shepherd, born ca. 1856.
44.7.2.5.3 Betty Shepherd, born ca. 1858.
44.7.2.5.4 Sarah Shepherd, born ca. 1860.
44.7.2.5.5 Elizabeth Shepherd, born ca. 1862.
44.7.2.5.6 Amanda Shepherd, born ca. 1865.44.7.2.6 William Sparks, son of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1833. He enlisted on November 7, 1861, at Estill Springs, Kentucky, in the 8th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army, and served in Company D and Company K. He died on September 26, 1863, from wounds received in the Battle of Chickamauga. (This battle was fought on September 19-20, 1863. For a full account of this regiment, see History of the 8th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry by T. S. Wright, published in 1880.
On May 26, 1855, William Sparks married Lucy Ann Rawlins at the home of John Finney in Estill County. (M.B. 1854-71, page 16) She was born ca. 1833. Four children were born to this union:
44.7.2.6.1 Daniel B. Sparks, born February 18, 1856. On October 19, 1876, he married Ellen Pritchett in Estill County. (M.B. 1871-87, page 160)
44.7.2.6.2 Polly Ann Sparks, born September 18, 1857.
44.7.2.6.3 John S. Sparks, born December 30, 1858. On October 6, 1880, he married Adaline Abney in Estill County. (M.B. 1871-87, page 268)
44.7.2.6.4 Eli Sparks, born April 20, 1861.Lucy Ann (Rawlins) Sparks applied for a widow's pension on January 18, 1864, with Thomas Sparks and Daniel B. Rawlins as witnesses. On March 1, 1864, Lucy Ann married (second) Tucker Abney in Estill County. (M.B. 1854 -71, page 26) The marriage did not last long and they were divorced. On January 1, 1866, she married (third) Elkanah McDowell. On November 19, 1866, Archibald Snowden signed the pension papers as guardian of the children of William Sparks.
44.7.2.7 Fanny Jane Sparks, daughter of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1838. On March 28, 1857, she married William Watson. William Blanton acted as bondsman.
44.7.2.8 Thomas Sparks, son of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1840. He married Elizabeth MNU, ca. 1867. When the 1880 census was taken of Lee County, they had the following children:
44.7.2.8.1 Judah Sparks, born ca. 1869.
44.7.2.8.2 Luannah Sparks, born ca. 1871.
44.7.2.8.3 Martha Sparks, born ca. 1873.
44.7.2.8.4 Fanny Sparks, born ca. 1874.
44.7.2.8.5 Susan Sparks, born ca. 1876.
44.7.2.8.6 Joseph Sparks, born ca. 1878.44.7.2.9 Elihu P. Sparks, son of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1844. Like his brother, William Sparks, he enlisted in Company C, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, U.S. Army, at Estill Springs, KY, on September 23, 1861. While in the service, he was hospitalized for mumps and for "camp fever." According to his service record, he was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and had blue eyes and a dark complexion.
At the close of the war, Elihu married Josephine Gill on July 20, 1865, in Jessamine County, Kentucky, at the home of J. Buford. When the 1870 census was taken of Estill County, they were listed as the parents of:
44.7.2.9.1 Patsey Sparks, born ca. 1867.
44.7.2.9.2 William T. Sparks, born ca. 1869.44.7.2.10 Francis M. Sparks, son of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1846.
44.7.2.11 Taylor Sparks, son of Thomas and Patsy (Powell) Sparks, was born ca. 1848. On September 27, 1873, he married Angeline Dunaway in Estill County at the home of Jeff Walling. (M.B. 1871-87, page 74) When the 1880 census was taken of Estill County, Taylor and Angeline Sparks had the following persons living in their household: Dillar Neal, age 19; James Neal, age 15; and Zattie Blackwell. We do not know their relationship to Taylor Sparks, but they were probably children of Angeline by previous marriages.
After the death of his wife, Martha "Patsy" (Powell) Sparks, Thomas Sparks married Calista Mansfield on October 27, 1867, in Estill County. (M.B. 1854-71, page 59) They apparently had no children. As stated above, Thomas Sparks died in August 1870. When the 1880 census was taken, Calista (Mansfield) Sparks was living with the family of Pigg Johnson in Madison County.
44.8 James Sparks, probable son of Isaac and Catherine Sparks, was born between 1775 and 1794 according to the 1820 census of Madison County; however, if he was the youngest son of Isaac and Catherine, he was born ca. 1788. He was probably one of the two males, age 16-26, living with the family of 44. Isaac Sparks, Sr., when the 1810 census was taken of instill County. James Sparks paid taxes in Estill County from 1811 (when he came of age) to 1826, except for the years 1819 and 1820 when he paid taxes in Madison County. He apparently owned no land and paid the poll tax only. On March 16, 1813, James Sparks married Susanna Rogers in Estill County. His bondsman was John Rogers, and the marriage ceremony was conducted by David Chenault of Madison County. (M.B. A, page 6 and M.B. B, page 50) Susanna Rogers was a widow. On July 11, 1814, James Sparks gave consent to the marriage of a step-daughter as follows: "I am willing for the marriage between Sary Rogers my stepdaughter and Isaac Dunaway." He signed as Jams Sparks. Susanna signed as Susan Rogers, but the Rogers was crossed out and the name Sparks was added. Thomas Sparks attested to the consent.
When the 1820 census was taken, James Sparks was living in Madison County. With him was his wife and a male born between 1804 and 1810. The male was probably a son of Susanna (Rogers) Sparks by her previous marriage.
James Sparks apparently left this section of Kentucky ca. 1826. We do not know where he went nor whether he left descendants.
44.9 Peggy Sparks, possibly a daughter of Isaac and Catherine Sparks, was born between 1784 and 1790; if our speculation is correct, she was the youngest of the nine children. She may have been the female, aged 10 to 16, living in the household of Isaac Sparks, Sr., when the 1810 census was taken of Estill County; however, if this were the case, she would have needed the consent of her parents when she was married in 1811. The young female in the household of Isaac Sparks, Sr., may instead have been a granddaughter.
Peggy Sparks married Nathaniel Oldham on March 6, 1811, in Estill County. John Chaney acted as bondsman. (Actually the license was issued on that date, but it was not returned until May 6, 1812.) (M.B. B, page 38).
Nathaniel Oldham was born ca. 1782, a son of Jesse and Elizabeth (Simpson) Oldham who came to Kentucky in 1775 and settled in Madison County. Nathaniel and Peggy (Sparks) Oldham had only one child, a son named David Oldham, born ca. 1813. Peggy (Sparks) Oldham apparently died a short time after the birth of her son for on August 7, 1811, Nathaniel Oldham married (second) Dosha Spence.
David Oldham married and left Madison County. When he returned to Madison County, he was accompanied by a grown daughter. His stay in Kentucky was brief and he soon left for Missouri. We have no further data about him.
