[Editor's Note: 1.2.1.2.1.8 Thomas Sparks, who came to Lawrence County, Kentucky, in 1821, was a son of 1.2.1.2.1 William and Ann (MNU) Sparks about whom an article appeared in the Quarterly of June 1991, Whole No. 154. His parents had disposed of their property in Frederick County, Maryland, in 1764 and had moved to Rowan County, North Carolina, shortly thereafter. The move was made in order for them to join some other members of the Sparks family who had left Frederick County a few years earlier. William purchased land from his brother, 1.2.1.2.2 Matthew Sparks, in 1765 in Rowan County. Other Sparks families in Rowan County that year were headed by Solomon Sparks, Jonas Sparks, and 1.2.1.2 William Sample Sparks.
[William and Ann did not stay in Rowan County very long; by 1771 they had moved to Surry County, North Carolina. It was there that William died either late in 1801 or early in 1802. His will, which he had made on December 21,1801, was probated at the May 1802 term of the Surry County Court. He left most of his estate to be "equally and peaceably divided amongst my children and wife, she taking an equal share with one of the children." He appointed William Wilcox, William Sparks, Thomas Sparks, and George Sparks as executors of the will and "trustees for my wife and other children." Although he did not name all of his children in the will, we believe that he and Ann had ten children:

1.2.1.2.1.8 Thomas Sparks, son of William and Ann Sparks, was born ca. 1766, probably in Rowan County, North Carolina. He probably grew to manhood in Surry County, and it was probably there that he married Rebecca MNU ca. 1787. When the census was taken of Surry County in 1790, they had two children, a son and a daughter. Rebecca apparently died ca. 1795, and Thomas Sparks married (second) Dianah Wilcox ca. 1800. We have not found this family on an 1800 census, but Thomas' household was enumerated on the 1810 census of Surry County. Living in his household in 1810 was his wife along with six males and four females, all probably their sons and daughters.
Thomas Sparks paid taxes on 200 acres of land in Surry County in 1790. On January 9, 1795, he purchased 200 acres of land from Gilbert Keen. He sold this tract to his brother, George Sparks. On October 8, 1802, he purchased 100-acre tract which had belonged to his father from the executors of his father's estate for $150. He sold this tract to Benjamin Martin, John Spencer, and Thomas Cartwright on December 26, 1812. Thomas was present when this deed was registered in Surry County in November 1815.
These are the only deeds we have found for Thomas Sparks in Surry County, although it is apparent that he owned other property. He was taxed in 1812 on 200 acres; in 1813 on 378 acres; in 1815 on 697 acres (described as "on the waters of Deep Creek"), and in 1816, he was taxed in 100 acres "which adjoin Jonathan Sparks." His name does not appear on any subsequent tax list, and it seems obvious that he moved from Surry County ca. 1817.
Thomas Sparks moved to nearby Virginia ca. 1817 where he settled near the present-day boundary between Lee and Scott Counties. It was in Scott County that a daughter, Eleanor, married Peter Mauk in 1818; however, when the1820 census was taken, Thomas Sparks was listed in Lee County. With him, in addition to his wife, were seven males and three females, all of whom were probably his children. Thomas Sparks did not remain long in Virginia, and by the fall of 1821, he and a son, Allen Sparks, were in Floyd County, Kentucky, where each was issued a Kentucky Land Warrant for fifty acres of land on "a fork of Big Blame Creek." The warrants were dated September 3, 1821. Thomas and Allen settled in that portion of Floyd County which became a part of Lawrence County when that county was formed three months later, on December 6, 1821.
In all probability, Thomas Sparks was also accompanied to Lawrence County by his brother, James Sparks, and James's youngest son, Jesse Sparks. Most certainly, at least two other families, one headed by Levi Sparks and the other by George Sparks, who were relatives of Thomas and James Sparks, also arrived in Lawrence County ca. 1821. When the 1830 census was taken of Lawrence County, nine men named Sparks were shown as heads of households there.
On May 24, 1825, Thomas Sparks, Sr. was issued another Kentucky Land Warrant for fifty acres which adjoined his earlier grant. The land was in Lawrence County and was located on the Middle Fork of Laurel Creek, a stream which flows most of its ten miles through present-day Johnson County before entering Blame Creek in Lawrence County. Thomas Sparks, Jr. also acquired land that year on Lower Laurel Creek.
The last land transaction we have found involving Thomas Sparks, Sr. is a deed made in Lawrence County on March 11, 1836. He and his wife, Dianah, sold 200 acres of land on Laurel Creek to David Rose for $400.
Both Thomas and Dianah (Wilcox) Sparks probably died between 1836 and 1840. No record has been found of them on the 1840 census. They left no wills, nor have we found any administrative records of their estates. From census records, it seems apparent that Thomas Sparks was the father of fourteen children, four of them by his first marriage and ten by his second marriage. We have identified thirteen of them.

1.2.1.2.1.8.2 Joseph Sparks, probable son of Thomas and Rebecca Sparks, was born ca. 1790 in Surry County, North Carolina. It was there, in early 1815, that he married Martha Edwards. The marriage bond was dated Jananuary 28, 1815, and the marriage ceremony probably took place a few days later. Richard Gentry was Joseph's bondsman. Martha had been born ca. 1795 in North Carolina.
The couple went to housekeeping on Deep Creek where they owned 124 acres of land. When the 1820 census was taken, they had a son and two daughters. Then, ca. 1827, they decided to move to Lawrence County, Kentucky, to join Joseph's relatives. There they settled down on the Little Fork of Little Sandy River, but they attended church at the Big Blame Baptist Church, several miles away. They were listed on the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Lawrence County, and, according to these census records, it appears likely that they had nine children.
by 1850, Joseph Sparks had apparently died, and Martha, now a widow, had moved up the Big Sandy River to Pike County. She probably died there between 1860 and 1870.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.1 Etheldred Sparks was born ca. 1816 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He married Ellen Gent (or Ghent) on October 14, 1841, in Lawrence County, Kentucky. She was born ca. 1814 in Russell County, Virginia. Etheldred and Ellen lived most of their lives on Burning Fork of Raccoon Creek in Pike County, Kentucky, where he was a farmer. He apparently died ca. 1865, and Ellen died sometime after 1880. They had five children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.1.1 Martha Jane Sparks was born ca. 1842. She married William M. Helvy on July 19, 1856, in Pike County.

1.2.1.2.1.8.2.1.3 Josiah E. Sparks was born April 1, 1846, in Pike County. He became a mail carrier. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Emma Deskins on December 31, 1874, in Pike County. She had been born ca. 1853 in Pike County. She apparently died ca. 1875.
Josiah Sparks married (second) Louisa Jane Charles, probably in 1877. She had been born in December 1856 and was a daughter of Thomas and Mary Elizabeth (Cain) Charles. Josiah died on July 6,1909, and Louisa died on March 14, 1936. They were buried in the Bent Ridge Cemetery at Meta, Kentucky. They had ten children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.2.2 Frances Sparks was born ca 1818 in North Carolina. She married Reuben Kozee(or Keesee) on December 1, 1836, in Lawrence County, Kentucky. They had four children when the 1850 census was taken of that county. We have no further information about this family.

1.2.1.2.1.8.2.4 Sirena Sparks was born ca. 1822 in North Carolina. She married Daniel S. Carroll on October 17, 1844, in Lawrence County. He had been born ca. 1824 in North Carolina. When the 1850 and 1860 censuses were taken, they were living on Sinking Creek in Carter County. With them were their seven children.

Lorenzo died in Martin County, Kentucky, between 1886 and 1887. They had nine children.

He was probably the Richard Sparks who enlisted as a private in Company G, 5th Regiment Kentucky Infantry, Confederate States Army on November 10, 1861, in Pike County, Kentucky. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Mary June Johnson on January 24, 1849, in Pike County. She had been born ca. 1829 in Virginia. She and Richard had four children before her death, which apparently occurred ca. 1862. Richard Sparks married (second) Rebecca Davis on March 15, 1865, in Pike County. She had been born ca. 1841 in Virginia. She and Richard were living on Lower Johns Creek in Pike County when the 1880 census was taken. Rebecca died sometime between 1880 and 1900. Richard died sometime after 1900. They had eight children. Richard Sparks's twelve children were:

He married Mary Stanley ca. 1900. She had been born on July 7, 1871, on Road Fork of Pond Creek in Pike County and was a daughter of John Stanley. Richard and Mary moved to Arkansas ca. 1906 because of the poor health of Richard. He died at Crosses in Madison County, Arkansas, in 1913 and was buried there. Mary returned to Pike County where she died on February 4, 1939. She was buried in the Stanley Cemetery on Dix Fork. She and Richard had six children:

She married Jacob Ratliff on December 2, 1852, in Pike County. He had been born ca. 1831 and was a son of John and Nancy (Mastin) Ratliff. Keziah died on October 16, 1905, in Pike County and Jacob died there on April 11, 1911. When the 1860 census was taken of Pike County, they were shown with four children; it appears likely that other children were born to them at later times.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.7.1 Martha J. Ratliff was born October 16, 1853. She married George Anderson Helvey on December 24, 1879, and they had at least one child, Ballard R. Helvey.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.7.2 John Ratliff was born ca. 1855.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.7.3 Caroline Ratliff was born ca. 1857.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.7.4 Virginia Ratliff was born in the spring of 1860.1.2.1.2.1.8.2.8 Tabitha Sparks was born ca. 1832 in Kentucky. She married Rhodes Meade on June 15, 1848, in Pike County.
1.2.1.2.1.8.2.9 George William Sparks was born ca. 1835 in Kentucky. It seems quite likely that he was the George Sparks who married Alafair (MNU) Chaffin in January 1858 in Lawrence County. He was 22 years old; it was his first marriage; and he had been born in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was 27 years old; it was her third marriage; and she had been born in Logan County, Virginia (now West Virginia). When the 1860 census was taken, they were living in Wayne County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Living in their household in 1860 were four children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.2.9.4 Martha J. Sparks born 1858.On September 2, 1861, George Sparks enlisted in the 5th Regiment Virginia Infantry, United States Army, and served until he was given a medical discharge on August 18, 1862. (See the abstract of his pension file on page 3876.)
While we have no records to prove this statement, we believe that George Sparks and Alafair Sparks were divorced ca. 1866.We also believe that he was the George Sparks who married Rebecca C. (Ball) Burchett on July 7, 1867, in Carter County, Kentucky. Rebecca had been born ca. 1837 and was a widow of James Burchett.
George and Rebecca moved to Clinton County, Missouri, shortly after their marriage. (He apparently left his children by his first marriage with their mother.) He made application for a Civil War pension on May19, 1877, but died on March 15, 1878, probably before any action could be taken on the request. Rebecca applied for a widow's pension in 1890, and it was granted. She died on January 10, 1909. She and George apparently had no children.
George Sparks apparently had four children, all by his first marriage.

1.2.1.2.1.8.2.9.4 James Sparks was born ca. 1866.1.2.1.2.1.8.3 Eleanor ["Nellie"] Sparks was born on February 15, 1791, in Surry County, North Carolina. She married Peter Mauk on June 8, 1818, in Scott County, Virginia. He had been born on April 14, 1781, and this marriage may have been his second. He was a son of Frederick and Margaret Mauk. He and Nellie came to Kentucky shortly after their marriage and settled in that section of Lawrence County that became a part of Carter County in 1838. Nellie died there in March 1858, and Peter died on February 13, 1859. They were buried in the Mauk Cemetery in what is now Elliott County. They were the parents of eight children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.3.1 Peter C. Mauk was born September 17, 1818. He married Mary Perry on August 9, 1840. He died on March 28, 1890. He and Mary had at least three children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.3.1.1 John W. Mauk was born March 8, 1844. He died on April 14, 1895.
1.2.1.2.1.8.3.1.2 Peter C. Mauk, Jr. was born January 23, 1847. He died on April 25, 1891.
1.2.1.2.1.8.3.1.3 R. H. Mauk was born May 1, 1849, and died on October 25, 1888.1.2.1.2.1.8.3.2 Margaret ["Peggy"] Mauk was born June 8, 1820. She married Nelson Sparks on March 14, 1843, in Carter County, Kentucky. (See the June 1989 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 146, for further details of this family.)

She had been born on September 16, 1829, and was a daughter of Jesse and Nancy( ) Sparks. She and Fed (as he was called) had nine children. She died on November 10, 1876. Fed married (second) Amelia Annis Cox, probably in 1778. She had been born on November 30, 1841. She and Fed had one child. Fed died on February 4, 1901. He was the father of ten children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.3.5.1 Margaret E. Mauk was born August 15, 1860. She married Joseph Slusher on December 19, 1878. They had a daughter, 1.2.1.2.1.8.3.5.1.1 Mary Slusher.
1.2.1.2.1.8.3.5.2 Andrew Jackson ["Son"] Mauk was born July 6, 1862. He was married three times. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Cox. They had no children. His second marriage was to Sarah Goodman by whom he had a daughter, Ethel Mauk, who died at the age of fifteen. Son Mauk married, third, Lula Bear, who had been born on April 18, 1883. Son died on August 5, 1938, and Lula died on March 14, 1956. They had seven children:

She died on March 16,1877.1.2.1.2.1.8.4 Allen Sparks was born ca. 1795 in Surry County, North Carolina, and was a grown man when he accompanied his father to Kentucky where they settled in that part of Floyd County which would become Lawrence County in 1821. It was there that Allen bought 50 acres of land on Big Blame Creek on September 3, 1821, under a Kentucky Land Warrant which permitted vacant land to be purchased for $20 per 100 acres. He bought an additional 100 acres on January 15, 1831, and 50 acres on March 30, 1836.
On June 27, 1822, Allen married Elizabeth Kozee in Floyd County. She had been born ca. 1795 in Virginia and was a daughter of Richard and Sallie Kozee. Allen and Elizabeth settled down to housekeeping on Little Laurel Creek, quite near the Lawrence-Johnson Counties boundary. There, they reared nine sons and one daughter. Six of their sons served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Allen died between 1860 and 1870. Elizabeth died sometime after 1870.
1.2.1.2.1.8.4.1 Samuel Sparks was born ca. 1823 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. It was there that he married Nancy Skaggs on November 11, 1847, by Lewis Skaggs. She had been born in November 1823 in Kentucky and was a daughter of Lewis Skaggs who gave his consent to the marriage. Samuel and Nancy lived on Meadow Branch of Brushy Fork of Blame Creek where they bought 425 acres of land in 1857. There they reared seven children.
On May 21, 1864, Samuel Sparks enlisted as a captain in Company B, 68th Regiment Kentucky Enrolled Militia and served until he was mustered out on June 22, 1864. (See an abstract of his pension file on page 3881 oft his issue of the Quarterly.) He died on April 12, 1885. Nancy died sometime after 1900. They were buried in the Sparks Cemetery on Caines Creek in Lawrence County. They had the following children.

She had been born ca. 1831 in Virginia and was a daughter of Richard and Lucy (MNU) Dials. She and Reuben had one child, 1.2.1.2.1.8.4.2.1 Lucy Sparks, born in 1850. Elizabeth died on January 15, 1861, in Johnson County.
Reuben Sparks married (second) Jane House on August 21, 1861, in Johnson County by the Rev. John Hawes, a Methodist minister. She had been born ca. 1831. Shortly after his second marriage, Reuben enlisted on November 18, 1862, in Company A, 39th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry to serve for three years. He died of typhoid fever in the Regimental Hospital at Louisa, Kentucky, on May 4, 1863. (See an abstract of his wife's pension file beginning on page 3879 of this issue of the Quarterly.) He and Jane had no children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.4.2.1 Lucy Sparks was born on June 22, 1850. On December 20, 1869, the Lawrence County Court appointed Alexander Diles as her guardian. It seems likely that she was the Lucy Sparks, aged 35, born in Johnson County, Kentucky, who married Squire Bryant, aged 60, born in Alabama, in Carter County, Kentucky, on January 14, 1886.
1.2.1.2.1.8.4.3 Jesse B. Sparks, probable son of Allen and Elizabeth (Kozee) Sparks, was born ca. 1825. We believe he was the Jesse Sparks who married Sarah Faulkner on May 2, 1851, in Carter County, Kentucky. They had a child born there the following year, but by 1855 they were living on Caney Creek in Morgan County, Kentucky, where a second child was born. We have found no further records of the family.
1.2.1.2.1.8.4.3.1 Mary Ann Sparks was born on May 30, 1852, in Carter County, Kentucky.
1.2.1.2.1.8.4.3.2 John Milton Sparks was born on September 5, 1855, in Morgan County, Kentucky.1.2.1.2.1.8.4.4 Dianna Sparks was born on March 11, 1827. Descendants say that prior to her marriage to 1.2.1.2.1.6.7.5 Thomas Sparks, she had had a daughter, 1.2.1.2.1.8.4.4.1 Elizabeth Kozee, whose father was FNU Kozee. Elizabeth grew to maturity, was married, and had seven children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.4.4 Dianna Sparks married 1.2.1.2.1.6.7.5 Thomas Sparks ca. 1854. He, too, had been born on March 11, 1827, and was a son of 1.2.1.2.1.6.7 Jesse and Nancy (MNU) Sparks. Jesse Sparks was a son of 1.2.1.2.1.6 James Sparks and a nephew of 1.2.1.2.1.8 Thomas Sparks, Sr., subject of this article. Thus, Dianna and Thomas were second cousins.
A story handed down by descendants of this couple is that they were first cousins. The story is partly disproven by the fact that their fathers (1.2.1.2.1.8.4 Allen Sparks and 1.2.1.2.1.6.7 Jesse Sparks) were first cousins. It is completely disproven, however, by the fact that their mothers (Elizabeth and Nancy) were not sisters. Elizabeth Kozee did in fact have a sister, Nancy Kozee, but Nancy Kozee married Charles Staton on August 13, 1820, in Floyd County.
Another handed-down story of these descendants involves the color of their eyes, hair, and complexions. Those that favor their ancestor, Dianna Sparks, are said to belong to the "black set" while those that favor their ancestor, Thomas Sparks, are said to belong to the "sorrel set." Those with "black" characteristics have dark hair, dark eyes, and dark complexions. Those with "sorrel" characteristics have reddish hair, blue eyes, and fair complexions.
Dianna and Thomas lived on Caney Creek in that section of Carter County that became a part of Elliott County in 1869. It was there that they reared ten children. (Elizabeth Sparks, Dianna's daughter, was a 12-year-old girl in their household when the 1860 census was taken.) Thomas died on June 6, 1892, and Dianna died on June 23, 1907. They were buried near Gimlet, Kentucky.

William Sparks married Rachel Knipp on November 10, 1881, in Elliott County. She had been born on November 25, 1860. When the 1900 census was taken, William Sparks was with his family in Elliott County. His family consisted of his wife, Rachel Sparks, 37; a son, Samuel J. Sparks, 18; a daughter, Mary F. Sparks, 17; and a son, Henry T. Sparks, 15. William Sparks died on June 9, 1918, and Rachel died on May 2, 1920. Children:

In 1863, Daniel enlisted in the 40th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army. (See an abstract of his pension file beginning on page 3873.) Daniel and Elizabeth (Sparks) Sparks had a family of ten children--six sons and four daughters. Four of the sons enjoyed a local reputation as song writers and singers, according to a contemporary who has given this account of their talents. "Their names were Eli, Doodle, Bruce, and Jay. They could make songs and sing them as they went.
They could make poems as well as they made songs. Anytime there was an event in the community or some hardship, they would make a song or a poem about it. It is said that they could not read or write, but they were extremely smart and could do about anything."
Daniel Sparks died on November 1, 1904, and Elizabeth died on November 12, 1918. They were buried in the Daniel Sparks Cemetery on Garris Road on Mauk Ridge in Elliott County, Kentucky. The ten children of Daniel and Elizabeth (Sparks) Sparks were:

Peter and Alafair Sparks had nine children before her death on February 22, 1889. Her death left him with several small children, and on November 28, 1889, he married (second) Millie (Bevins) Grayson. She had been born in July 1863 and was the widow of Levi Grayson who had died leaving her with a small child. Peter and Millie had five children. He died at Ashland, Kentucky, on June 14, 1914. As indicated above, we believe that Rebecca, the first wife of Thomas Sparks, Senior died ca. 1798, and he married (second) Dianah Wilcox shortly thereafter. Their first child was born in 1801 in Surry County, North Carolina. The last record we have found of Dianah Sparks is a deed, recorded in Johnson County, but made on March 11, 1836, in Lawrence County, by which she and Thomas deeded 200 acres of land on Laurel Fork of Big Blame Creek to David Rose. The last record we have found of Thomas Sparks, Sr. is a deed, recorded in Johnson County but made on September 19, 1837, in Lawrence County, by which he deeded 50 acres of land on Lower Fork to Nicholas Sparks. Witnesses to the deed were Thomas Sparks and Henry Jayne.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5 Thomas Sparks, Jr. was born November 8, 1801, in Surry County, North Carolina. He accompanied his parents to Lawrence County, Kentucky, and it was there that he married Catherine Jayne on December 24, 1823. She had been born January 15, 1807, and was a daughter of William and Dorcas (Ramey) Jayne. Thomas and Catherine lived near his father on Lower Laurel Creek in that part of Lawrence County that became a part of Johnson County in 1843, but ca. 1859 they moved to newly-formed Boyd County, Kentucky. It was there that Thomas died on February 8, 1876. Catherine died in Lewis County, Kentucky, on May 6, 1883. They had twelve children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.1 Keziah Sparks was born ca. 1824 in Lawrence County. It was there that she married Campbell Ghent on February 23, 1839. We have no further information about this couple.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.2 Dorcas Sparks was born on September 9, 1826. She married Aaron Fairchild on February 25, 1845, in Johnson County. He had been born ca. 1822 in Virginia and was a son of Aaron and Rebecca Fairchild. Dorcas and Aaron had four children when the 1850 census was taken of Johnson County. She died in 1851.

When the 1860 census was taken, Bill and Elizabeth were in Floyd County, Kentucky, but they moved to Johnson County shortly thereafter where they lived at Boons Camp. Elizabeth died there on March 19, 1885, and Bill died there on April 13, 1895. They had eight children.

He served in the 2nd Regiment Kentucky Cavalry during the Civil War, and it was probably during his military service that he met his future wife, Matilda D. They were married ca. 1866 in Hart County, Kentucky, where they lived the rest of their lives. Matilda died on September 11, 1889, and Thomas died on March 24, 1907. (See an abstract of his pension file on page 3882.) They had five children.

1.2.1.2.1.8.5.8.5 Eleanor ["Nellie"] G. Sparks was born March 18, 1878.1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9 Henry J. Sparks was born in March 1839. He married Elizabeth Rouse on September 26, 1861, in Boyd County. She had been born in September 1836 in Greenup County, Kentucky, and was a daughter of Samuel and Mary ["Polly"] (Payne) Rouse. Henry served in the 14th Regiment Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. (See an abstract of his pension file on page 3877of the present issue of the Quarterly.) He died on August 27, 1905, in Lewis County, Kentucky, and Elizabeth died there on May 13, 1917. They had eight children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.1 Samuel T. Sparks was born ca. 1862.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.2 Mary C. Sparks was born ca. 1865. According to a descendant, when she was about 15 years old, she fell in love with a17-year-old neighbor boy, William Mutters, by whom she had a son, born in 1881. He was named 1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.2.1 Asa Garfield Sparks, and he was adopted by his grandparents, 1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9 Henry and Elizabeth (Rouse) Sparks. Ace Sparks (as he was called) grew to maturity; he married Motie May Applegate, and they had six children. His mother, Mary C. Sparks, married Lewis Howell, and they had ten children. Unfortunately, we have not learned the names of any of these children. Lewis Howell died on February 28, 1929, and Mary died in May 1935.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.3 Virginia E. ["Jenny"] Sparks was born in January 1866. She married Samuel Sparks on September 26, 1889, in Lewis County, Kentucky. He had been born in July 1869 and was a son of William Caleb and Mary Jane (McClatchey) Sparks, descendants of a branch of the Sparks family that had settled in early Lewis County. Samuel and Jenny Sparks had four children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.4.3 Effle Sparks.1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.5 Everett Donald Sparks was born January 26,1870, in Boyd County. He married Bertha Riggs on February 27, 1895, in Lewis County. They moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1912, where Everett became a streetcar motorman. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He died on October 28, 1953. They had two children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.5.2 Wilburn Sparks.1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.6 Anna Laura Sparks was born ca. 1872. She married FNU Chenault ca. 1890, and they moved to Arizona where Anna is said to have died when their son, 1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.6.1 William Chenault, was born. The child was brought to Lewis County where he was reared by his maternal grandparents.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.7 Henry H. Sparks was born in February 1874. He married Jennie Crance on December 24, 1896, in Lawrence County, Ohio. She had been born in March 1872 and was a daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Crance. Henry Sparks died on May 2, 1900, and Jennie died on October 17, 1905. They had two children,
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.7.1 Boyd Sparks and
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.7.2 Henry Monroe Sparks.1.2.1.2.1.8.5.9.8 James Daniel Sparks was born ca. 1876. According to relatives, he disappeared at Memphis, Tennessee, when he was a young man, apparently a victim of foul play.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.10 Daniel Sparks, son of Thomas and Catherine (Jayne) Sparks, was born March 9, 1841. He died on September 11, 1859, in Boyd County, Kentucky.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.11 Catherine Sparks was born on May 9, 1844; she died on August 24, 1859, in Boyd County.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12 John Wilbur Sparks was born on March 18, 1846, in Johnson County. He married Nancy Jane Jackson on June 5, 1870, in Boyd County. She had been born on April 7, 1847, and was a daughter of FNU and Elizabeth (Thompson) Jackson. According to a descendant, John Wilbur and his brother, Henry, bought 400 acres of timberland in Lewis County and moved there ca. 1870. Nancy Jane died there on March 31, 1905; John Wilbur died sometime after 1900. They had six children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12.1 Sylvester Barnett Sparks was born October 16, 1871. He married Belle Redden. She had been born on December 24, 1874, and was a daughter of Joseph and Amelia Redden. Sylvester died in 1940. She and Sylvester had six children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12.3.2 Howard Riggs.1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12.4 William Thomas Sparks was born March 30, 1877. He married Edna Frances McGowan. They had no children. He died on May 13, 1959.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12.5 John James Sparks was born February 26, 1879. He was married twice; however, we have learned nothing about the marriages except that there were no children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12.6 Catherine ["Katie"] Sparks was born December 22, 1883. She married Frank Lester Mault in 1911. He had been born in Scioto County, Ohio, and was a son of George W. and Harriet S. (Titus) Mault. Katie died on April 14, 1970. She had one child, 1.2.1.2.1.8.5.12.6.1 Georgia Marie Mault.

[Editor's Note: The December 1991 issue of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No.156, contained the first part of an article about Thomas Sparks, son of William and Ann Sparks, and some of his descendants. We now present the second part of this article. ]
1.2.1.2.1.8.6 Sarah Sparks, daughter of Thomas and Dianah (Wilcox) Sparks, was born July 24, 1803, in Surry County, North Carolina. She accompanied her parents to Lawrence County, Kentucky, and it was there, on Christmas Day 1824, that she married Henry Jayne by James Wheeler, a justice of the peace. Henry had been born on October 5, 1803, in Washington County, Virginia, and was a son of William and Dorcas (Ramey or Remey) Jayne.
(Three of the children of Thomas and Dianah (Wilcox) Sparks were married to three of the children of William and Dorcas (Ramey) Jayne.
1.2.1.2.1.8.5 Thomas Sparks, Jr. married Catherine Jayne;
1.2.1.2.1.8.6 Sarah Sparks married Henry Jayne; and
1.2.1.2.1.8.8 Daniel Wilcox Sparks married Sarah Jayne.
Much of the information we have about these families has been obtained from (1) A History of Johnson County. Kentucky. published by Mitchel Hall in 1928; and (2) The East Kentuckian. Vols. 14-19. Clayton Cox. editor.)
Henry and Sarah (Sparks) Jayne settled down to housekeeping near the little village of Flat Gap. and it was there that they spent the rest of their lives. Henry died there on May 18. 1870. and Sarah died on October 14, 1893. They were the parents of nine children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.1 Eleanor ["Nelly"] Jayne was born January 11, 1825. She married Isom Daniel on May 5. 1842. in Lawrence County. He had been born on November 20. 1823. at Whitehouse, Kentucky. and was a son of Isham and Mary [ "Polly" ] (Borders) Daniel. He died on November 26. 1898. and Nelly died on August 19. 1899. They were the parents of fourteen children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.1.1 Henry J. Daniel was born ca. 1843. He was a Baptist minister for sixty years. He married Rebecca Lexatta ["Lou"] Vanhoose. She had been born January 20. 1847. She died on January 7. 1932. Henry Daniel died on August 6. 1920. She and Henry had eight children:

James died on December 31, 1925.

1.2.1.2.1.8.6.1.13 Granville V. Daniel was born January 2, 1866. He was a physician in Paintsville, Kentucky, where he was one of the organizers of the Golden Rule Hospital. He married Josephine Rice in 1892. She was a daughter of D. J. and Mary (Fairchild) Rice. She and Granville had one child, 1.2.1.2.1.8.6.1.13.1 Virgil Daniel.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.1.14 Cordella A. Daniel was born December 14, 1867. She married John E. Fitch on February 23, 1887, in Johnson County. He had been born ca. 1865 and was a son of Sampson and Dorcas (Daniel) Fitch. He and Cordelia lived at Sip, Kentucky, where they reared five children:

He had been born ca. 1825 and was a son of Isham and Polly (Borders) Daniel; thus, he was a brother of Isom Daniel who had been married to Sarah's sister, 1.2.1.2.1.8.6.1 Eleanor ["Nelly"] Jayne, in 1842. (See above.) David and Sarah lived near Whitehouse, Kentucky, where they reared eleven children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.2.1 Martha Daniel was born ca. 1847. She was blind.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.2.2 Wyatt Winston Daniel was born ca. 1848. He was a minister. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Lydia Rice ca. 1868. She was a daughter of John and Nancy J. (Mollette) Rice. Wyatt and Lydia had six children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.6.3.4 Perlina Jayne was born ca. 1867. She married FNU Keaton.1.2.1.2.1.8.6.4 Martha Jayne was born December 28, 1833. She married David Ross on March 4, 1853. He had been born ca. 1823 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, and may have been a brother of Mary Ross. (See 1.2.1.2.1.8.6.3, above.) Martha died on March 26, 1893, and David died on January 5, 1897. They were the parents of fourteen children.

He had been born on March 24, 1868, and was a son of 1.2.5.1.2.1.1.1 Reuben D. and Mary (Curnutte) Sparks and a grandson of 1.2.5.1.2.1.1 Garrett and Elizabeth (Boggs) Sparks. He was a most influential citizen of Johnson County and was instrumental in establishing the Enterprize Academy at Flat Gap, which was a training school for teachers. He married Julia Hager on March 10, 1875. She had been born ca. 1843 and was a daughter of John J. and Rhoda (Godsey) Hager. Henry and Julia had three children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.8.1 Irvin Jayne was born May 3, 1876. He died on February 7, 1935. He never married.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.8.2 Ernest Jayne was born January 16, 1879. He was a successful farmer and business man and was involved in the early development of the oil and gas industry in and around Flat Gap. He served as a magistrate and was an active member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He married Minnie Holbrook on September 29, 1906. She had been born on February 5,1889, at Martha, Kentucky, and was a daughter of Pleasant and Sarah (Sparks) Holbrook. Ernest Jayne died on October 18, 1960, and Minnie died on November 11, 1967. Augusta was a member of the Flat Gap Enterprise Baptist Church, and she taught school for several years. Thomas died on December 25, 1946, and Augusta died on November 26, 1959.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.9 William Jayne was born September 23, 1843. He served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War and was wounded three times. After returning home, he was licensed to preach in the Baptist Association. He became principal of the Enterprise High School at Flat Gap. He married Paulina ["Lina"] Lucas ca. 1870. She had been born on February 19, 1846, at Stamping Ground, Kentucky, and was a daughter of Legrand and Lutitia (MNU) Lucas. William died on December 22, 1917. He and Lina had three children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.6.9.1 William Legrand Jayne was born May 12, 1873. He became a well-known educator in eastern Kentucky and was a professor at Morehead State University until his death. He married Virginia Hamilton on February 1, 1898. She had been born on December 5, 1876, and was a daughter of J. E. and Katherine (Todd) Hamilton. She and William had nine children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.7 Matthew Sparks was born ca. 1805 in Surry County, North Carolina. He married Alsey Osburn ca. 1832, probably in Lawrence County, Kentucky. She had been born ca. 1815 in Kentucky and was a daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth (MNU) Osburn, natives of Kentucky. Matthew and Alsey lived near Flat Gap, Kentucky, where they reared twelve children. Alsey died on January 31, 1878, and Matthew died sometime after 1880, probably in Elliott County, Kentucky, at the home of his son, Daniel Sparks.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.1 Allen Sparks was born ca. 1833. He married Mary Hundley on March 9, 1877, in Johnson County. (The license to marry was issued on March 7th; Allen was then 44 years old, and it was his first marriage. Mary was 19 years old, and it was her first marriage.) Allen apparently died in the spring of 1897. He had made a will on March 10, 1890, by which he left one dollar to his daughter, 1.2.1.2.1.8.7.1.1 Sarah J. Sparks. He left the rest of his estate to his brother, Jesse Sparks. We have no further information about this family.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.2 Jesse Sparks was born in May 1835. He married Catherine ["Kittie"] Kozee ca. 1859. She had been born in August 1842. Jesse and Kittie apparently had no children of their own, but they reared a foster son, John Tollson. They died sometime after 1900, probably in Johnson County.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.3 Henry Sparks was born ca. 1837. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Mary Conley on November 2, 1857, in Johnson County. He was 22 years of age and Mary was aged 16. She had been born ca. 1841 and was a grand?daughter of Edmund and Lydia (Joynes) Conley, pioneer settlers of Johnson County.

After the death of his first wife, Mary (Conley) Sparks, Henry Sparks married (second) Sarah A. Calvin on October 24, 1884, in Johnson County. He was 48 years old, and it was his second marriage; she was aged 35, and it was her first marriage. Henry died sometime before the 1900 census was taken of Magoffin County. Sarah was listed on that census with her two sons: Rufus Sparks, aged 15, and John Sparks, aged 12.

Shortly after his marriage, Nathan Sparks enlisted in the 14th Regiment Kentucky Infantry of the Union Army and served until the Civil War ended. He died in the Home for Disabled Veterans of Ohio on August 30, 1919.

Daniel and Rebecca were in Elliott County when the 1880 census was taken, but by 1900 they had moved to Kenton County, Kentucky. Daniel died in 1929 and Rebecca died on May 2, 1930. They had nine children.

1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.4 William Flanery Sparks was born August 5, 1879. He was living in a boardin g house in Ashland, Kentucky, when the 1900 census was taken. He married Goldie Lee Bowling sometime later. He died in 1970.1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.5 James N. Sparks was born in October 1881. He was a street-car motorman in Covington, Kentucky, when the 1900 census was taken.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.6 Susan Alsey Sparks was born in July 1883. She married Thomas Baker, and they moved to Tacoma, Washington. She is said to have had no children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.7 Martha E. Sparks was born in September 1886. She married Thomas Purdy, and they moved to the state of Washington.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.8 Eliza S. Sparks was born in August 1889. She died when she was only eighteen years old.1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.9 Virginia Sparks was born in November 1891. She was married twice. Her first marriage was to Bernard Rankin in Spokane, Washington. Her second marriage was to Thomas Purdy. She died in 1918. After her death, Thomas married her sister, 1.2.1.2.1.8.7.8.7 Martha E. Sparks. (See above.)
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.9 Nancy Emeline Sparks was born ca. 1850. She married William J. McKenzie on Christmas Day 1873.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.10 Andrew Sparks was born October 10, 1852.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.11 William L. Sparks was born on June 21, 1855.
1.2.1.2.1.8.7.12 Mary Jane Sparks was born on October 22, 1859.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8 Daniel Wilcox Sparks was born on October 27, 1806, in Surry County, North Carolina, and was a teenage lad when he accompanied his parents to Lawrence County, Kentucky. It was there that he grew to manhood, and it was there that he was married three times. His first marriage was to Sarah Jayne on July 31, 1834. She had been born ca. 1813 and was a daughter of William and Dorcas (Ramey) Jayne. (See also Item F, above.) Daniel and Sarah lived on a 300-acre farm on Hood Creek, a tributary of Big Blaine Creek. There they had eight children before Sarah died on June 27, 1854.
Daniel married (second) Ellender Cordial (or Cordell) on May 5, 1859. He was 46 years, and it was his second marriage. Ellender was 32 years old, and it was her first marriage. They were married by Enoch Green, a Baptist preacher. Ellender was a daughter of William and Jane (Wheeler) Cordle (or Caudill). When the 1880 census was taken of Lawrence County, Daniel and Ellender had four children in their household. She apparently died between June 1880 and the early part of 1881.
(In the early records of Lawrence County, the surnames of Caudill, Caudle, Cordial, Cordell, and Cordle were frequently interchanged. Even within the same family, some members preferred one spelling to another. We have tried to use these names with the spellings that have been furnished to us.)
The third marriage of Daniel Sparks was to Martha Hardy on December 5, 1881. She had been born in March 1855 in Virginia and was a widow with a three-year-old son, Robert Hardy. Relatives say that her maiden name was Spriggs. She and Daniel had four children before his death, which occurred in October 1900. He was buried in the family cemetery on his farm on Hood Creek. Descendants say he carved his own headstone, using a stone which is about four feet tall. He was the father of sixteen children.

He had been born in April 1858, in Wise County, Virginia, and was nicknamed "John, the Baptist." He died on December 27, 1905, in Dial, Texas. Sarah died there in 1906. They were the parents of at least one child, 1.2.1.2.1.8.8.1.2.1 Caludia Ethel Wells.

1.2.1.2.1.8.8.1.4 Ulysses G. Wellman (twin of George) was born in April 1870.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.1.5 George Wellman (twin of Ulysses G.) was born in April 1870.1.2.1.2.1.8.8.2 Henry Wilcox Sparks was born on November 11, 1836, on Hood Creek in Lawrence County, and this is where he spent the rest of his life. He was a most successful farmer and owned a grist mill, sawmill, and a tannery. He was also a justice of the peace. He married Diadema Bentley on August 30, 1867, in Letcher County, Kentucky. She had been born in Letcher County on February 10, 1848.
Henry Sparks brought his bride to Lawrence County where they reared twelve children. Diadema died on July 19, 1914, and Henry died on April 27, 1923. They were buried in the family cemetery on Hood Creek.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.2.1 Emma Cornelia Sparks was born March 22, 1868. She was married twice. Her first marriage was to Elijah Brown by whom she had at least one child, 1.2.1.2.1.8.8.2.1.1 McGuire Brown. Her second marriage was to John A. White.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.2.2 Rachel Alafair Sparks was born September 10, 1869. She was married three times. Her first marriage was to John C. B. Barker on February 17, 1887. He had been born on October 16, 1858, and was a son of Peter and Marina [?] (Fairchild) Barker. John and Rachel had seven children:

He was elected Lawrence County Attorney while still in the army in Europe during World War II. Subsequently, he was elected as Commonswealth's Attorney. In 1955, he was elected as judge of the 24th Judicial District of Kentucky, a position he held until his retiremement in 1976.He died on October 16, 1988. He and his wife, the former Mary Lou Branham, had four children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.8.2.12 Sarah Jane Sparks was born March 8, 1885. She married Burnham Roberts in 1903. He had been born ca. 1880 and was a son of Reed and Mary Jayne (Smith) Roberts. Sarah Jane died on September 19, 1942. He and Sarah Jane had five children:

He had been born on Hood Creek on November 21, 1841, and was a son of John R. and Rachel (Lemasters) Wheeler. Haley died on October 17, 1877, and James died on January 19, 1921. They had five children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.4.1 Ulysses Sherman Wheeler was born February 23, 1866. He was married twice. His first marriage was on July 6, 1891, to Frances Brown. His second marriage was to Lennie MNU. He died on March 31, 1921.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.4.2 John Harrison Wheeler was born June 16, 1868. He married May Fannin. He died on March 27, 1907.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.4.3 Henry Washington Wheeler was born April 27, 1870. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Cora McGuire on October 30, 1890. His second marriage was to Susie Butcher. He died on August 9, 1957.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.4.4 Peter Taylor Wheeler was born May 28, 1873. He married Leora Obra Aulick. He died on August 24, 1945.

1.2.1.2.1.8.8.11 Jeremiah ["Jerry"] Sparks was born ca. 1864. He is said to have been married, but died shortly thereafter.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.12 Charlotte ["Lottie"] Sparks was born May 4, 1868, in Lawrence County. It was there that she married Jesse James Caudill [or Cordial] on March 4, 1886. He had been born on December 16, 1857, in Lawrence County and was a son of the Rev. Jeremiah and Jane (Holbrook) Caudill. Lottie and Jesse had four children before his death, which occurred on June 24, 1894, at the age of 37 years.
After the death of her first husband, Lottie was married two more times. Her second husband was Morse Griffin of Lawrence County. This marriage ended in divorce. Her third marriage was to Enoch Green. She died on September 25, 1910. She had four children, all by her first marriage.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.12.1 Virgil Caudill was born February 25, 1887. On November 22, 1919, he married Lillian S. Steele. She had been born on November 29, 1896, and was a daughter of John and Geneva Bell (Pack) Steele. Virgil died ca. 1968. She and Virgil had two children,

1.2.1.2.1.8.8.12.1.2 Marcella Caudill.1.2.1.2.1.8.8.12.2 Monte Vernon Caudill was born May 6, 1889. He married Ruby Margaret Perdue on June 6, 1914, in Boyd County, Kentucky. She had been born July 13, 1895, in Boyd County and was a daughter of Dewitt C. and Augusta (Miller) Perdue. She died on March 20, 1957, and Monte died on June 22, 1966. They were the parents of four children:

Cora married (second) John Boldman, and they had two children, Jack Boldman and Ruth Boldman. Cora died in 1972 at South Point, Ohio.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.12.4 Charles Russell Hubert Caudill was born March 11, 1893. He married Ida Marie Bishop on December 23, 1931, at Ironton, Ohio. He died on March 26, 1976, in Boyd County. He and Ida had no children.
As indicated above, the third marriage of Daniel Wilcox Sparks was to a widow, Martha (Spriggs) Hardy, on December 5, 1881, in Lawrence County. To this union four children were born.
1.2.1.2.1.8.8.13 Stella Virgie Sparks was born December 24, 1882. She married John Alonzo Creech on October 9, 1900, in Elliott County, Kentucky. He had been born on October 29, 1881. He and Stella had nine children. Stella died on January 2, 1967, and John died on November 30, 1973.

[Editor's Note: Thomas Sparks (ca.1766-ca.1837) had thirteen children who reached maturity. Information about the nine oldest children was presented in the December 1991 issue of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 156 and the March 1992 issue, Whole No. 157. We now conclude this series by presenting information about the remaining four children and their families.]
1.2.1.2.1.8.10 Elisha Sparks, son of Thomas and Dianah (Wilcox) Sparks, was born ca. 1809 in North Carolina. He married Susanna Pridemore on December 16, 1833, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, by Walter Osborne. His bondsmen were Daniel Sparks, Saul Sparks, and David Sparks. Susanna had been born ca. 1810 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and was a daughter of John Pridemore who gave his consent to the marriage, since she was then not of age. Elisha and Susanna lived on a road between the communities of Flat Gap and Paintsville, near the headwaters of Hood Creek. It was there that they lived for the rest of their lives. Susanna died on July 2, 1889, and Elisha died on December 26, 1893. They were buried in a small cemetery not far from their home. They had thirteen children.
[Mrs. Jean (Slone) McCarty, a great-great-granddaughter of Elisha and Susanna (Pridemore) Sparks, has shared with us a description of two of the Sparks cemeteries where her ancestors were buried. We are pleased to include here a portion of her observations.]
"A few years ago, " Mrs. McCarty wrote, "We visited the small and unnamed cemetery where Elisha and Susanna were buried. It is on Kentucky State Road 1092, about one-half mile off Kentucky State Road 201. It is across the road and up a small hill from the Kerz Enterprise Baptist Church and is still being used occasionally. Elisha and Susanna have field stone markers onto which names and dates have been carved; however, the stones are beginning to crumble. Elisha's son, Benjamin, is also buried there. "

Martin McKenzie had been born ca. 1838 in Kentucky and was a son of James Henry and Frances ["Fanny"] (Estep) McKenzie, natives of Virginia. Martin and Lydia had six children.

Martha had been born on May 1, 1843, in Virginia and was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (MNU) Salyer, natives of Virginia.

On October 6, 1861, William Sparks went to Catlettsburg, Kentucky, where he enlisted in Company B, 14th Regiment Kentucky Infantry, United States Army. He served in this unit until January 1865; he was subsequently granted a pension for his service. (See page 3963 of this issue of the Quarterly for an abstract of the papers in his pension file.) Mrs. McCarty wrote the following regarding his military service.
"My father remembered his grandfather Sparks quite well. He was with Gen. Sherman on his campaign to take Atlanta, but he never got there because he was wounded in early August 1864. The bone in his right foot was badly shattered by a bullet, and he remained a cripple for the rest of his life. His toenails grew quite funny, and he couldn't cut them himself, so he hired his grandchildren to cut them. "
William Sparks son of Elisha and Susanna (Pridemore) Sparks died on October 18, 1913, and Martha died on December 15, 1915. They were buried in the Sparks Cemetery on Sparks Branch. Of this cemetery, Mrs. McCarty has written: The cemetery where William and Martha (and all but one of their children) are buried is also on Kentucky State Road 1092. Sparks Branch turns off the road and goes up a hollow and the cemetery is located about one-half mile up the hollow and high on a hill. There is a road which is passable provided it hasn't rained the night before. William's headstone is the typical Civil War one with his name and Co. D., 14th KY. Inf. carved on it.
In passing, I would like to say that my father's generation took almost fanatical care of that cemetery. Mrs. McCarty continues. They met faithfully every year at 10 a.m. on Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day), regardless of the day of the week. They mowed the grass; cleaned up the fence row; and whitewashed the stones. Sunken graves were filled in and fresh flowers were placed upon the mounds. In the absence of fresh flowers, artificial flowers were made from crepe paper and placed upon the graves. It was an all-day family affair which, unfortunately, is fast disappearing as a custom.
William and Martha (Salyer) Sparks had twelve children.

She had been born in October 1862. When the 1900 census was taken of Johnson County, James and Elizabeth were shown with six children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.10.3.4 Lafayette ["Lafe"] Sparks was born January 5, 1870. He became a blacksmith. He married Phoebe Ellen Salyer on March 25, 1893 tin Johnson County, Kentucky. She had been born in April 1879 and was a daughter of Joseph and Isabel (Mullins) Salyer. Lafe and Ellen lived on Franks Creek. He died on February 27, 1946. He and Ellen had nine children:

(Margaret Sparks was a daughter of 1.2.1.2.1.8.13 Nicholas Sparks, a brother of 1.2.1.2.1.8.13.11 Elisha Sparks, thus John and Margaret were second cousins, genealogically speaking. See below.) John Sparks was an enterprising man and was elected jailor of Johnson County during the 1920s. He died on January 15, 1938, and Missouri died on June 20, 1966. They were the parents of thirteen children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.10.6 Dianah Sparks was born ca. 1846. She married Edwin O'Bryan on August 21, 1866 in Johnson County, Kentucky.
1.2.1.2.1.8.10.7 Catherine Ann Sparks was born ca. 1848.1.2.1.2.1.8.10.8 Tillman Sparks was born on March 27, 1850, in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Susan E. Murray on May 6, 1874, in Johnson County at the home of Sam Murray. She had been born January 18 1853, in Johnson County and was a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Jane (Stambaugh) Murray. Tillman and Susie (as she was called) lived on part of Hood Creek which is in Lawrence County. There, they had nine children.
Sometime between 1900 and 1910, Tillman and Susie moved to Greenup County, Kentucky, where Susie died on February 27, 1914. Tillman married (second) Mrs. Mary ["Polly"] Carpenter ca. 1918, and they had one child, a daughter. Tillman died on June 9, 1929, in Ashland, Kentucky.

She had been born June 28, 1878, and was a daughter of Lewis and Nancy Caroline (Slone) Salyers. Shortly after their marriage, Alvin and Ellen (as they were called) moved to Boyd County, Kentucky. He died there on June 2, 1943, and Ellen died in Michigan on September 20, 1949. They had seven children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.10.9 Alexander Sparks was born on September 10, 1852. He died on June 10, 1877. Apparently, he was never married.
1.2.1.2.1.8.10.10 Unnamed son Sparks was born on February 4, 1855, and died at birth.
1.2.1.2.1.8.10.11 Benjamin Sparks was born on October 2, 1856, in Johnson County. It was there that he married Nancy Jane Caudill on January 6, 1876. He was 20 years of age and Nancy was 21 at the time of their marriage. Benjamin apparently died between 1895 and 1900 since Nancy was listed as a widow on the 1900 census of Johnson County. With her were six children, and it was stated on the census that she had had four other children who were now dead.1.2.1.2.1.8.10.11.1 William Hays Sparks was born in June 1879.

1.2.1.2.1.8.11 Elijah Sparks, son of Thomas and Dianah (Wilcox) Sparks, was born ca. 1811 in North Carolina and was about ten years old when his parents arrived in Lawrence County, Kentucky. It was there that he married Sarah ["Sally"] Evans on October 19, 1832, with Wesley Evans, father of Sally, giving his consent. Daniel Sparks, brother of Elijah, was a witness along with E.E. Stikes. Sally had been born in Virginia on September 14, 1811. She and Elijah lived on the Puncheon Fork of Hood Creek in northwest Johnson County where they reared nine children. Elijah died between 1870 and 1880. Sally died on October 4, 1891.
1.2.1.2.1.8.11.1 William Sparks was born ca. 1833 in Floyd County. Kentucky. He married Louisa Blevins on September 15,1855, in Johnson County, by Hardy Williams, a Baptist minister. William was 22 years of age and Louisa was aged 16 years. Her father, Eli Blevins. gave his consent to the marriage.
On October 27.1863, William Sparks enlisted in Company I, 47th Regiment Kentucky Infantry of the Union Army and served until the end of the Civil War. (See page 3966 of this issue of the Quarterly for an abstract of the papers in his pension file.) He returned to his home near Flat Gap, Kentucky, and it was there that he died on May 16. 1879. Louisa died near Bonanza, Kentucky, sometime after 1900. They were the parents of seven children.

He had been born on April 3, 1837, in Scott County, Virginia, and was a son of David Jesse and Anna (Saunders) McKenzie. Lafayette and Mary Ann had ten children, including an unnamed infant who died at birth. Mary Ann died on December 15, 1903, in Johnson County. Lafayette died there on December 19,1905.

1.2.1.2.1.8.11.2.2 Sarah Ann McKenzie was born August 5, 1860, on McKenzie Branch in northwest Johnson County. She married Santford Blanton on February 13, 1879. He had been born January 29, 1858, at Volga, Kentucky. He died there on January 24, 1939, and Sarah Ann died there on May 1, 1941. They were the parents of fourteen children:

She had been born in 1868 and was a daughter of Joseph and Samantha (Salyer) Stapleton. James McKenzie died on November 9, 1925, in Meeker County, Minnesota, and Mary died in 1949. They had seven children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.12 Dianah Sparks, daughter of Thomas and Dianah (Wilcox) Sparks, was born ca. 1813 in North Carolina. She married Pardon Morris on June 1, 1832, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, with her father, Thomas Sparks, giving permission to her marriage. Pardon Morris was a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Cains) Morris. He and Dianah lived on or near Cains Creek where they had ten children.
1.2.1.2.1.8.12.1 Benjamin B. Morris was born on May 16, 1833. He became a Methodist preacher and also served as a justice of the peace. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Louisa Griffith on October 17, 1852, and they had ten children:

1.2.1.2.1.8.13 Nicholas Sparks was born ca. 1812 in North Carolina, and was a young lad when he came to Lawrence County, Kentucky, with his parents in 1821. It was there that he married Dorcas Ross on December 21,1837. She had been born ca. 1817 in Scott County, Virginia, and was a daughter of David Ross who gave his consent to her marriage. Nicholas and Dorcas lived in the Flat Gap area of Johnson County, Kentucky, where they reared twelve children. Nicholas died there sometime between 1870 and 1880, and Dorcas died sometime after 1880.

1.2.1.2.1.8.13.2 Bethany Sparks was born ca. 1842. She died on June 29, 1857, at the age of sixteen years.
1.2.1.2.1.8.13.3 Robert Sparks was born ca. 1844. He married Frances Melvina Carter on August 14, 1865, in Johnson County, with Daniel Sparks and Daniel Conley as witnesses. (See above.)1.2.1.2.1.8.13.5 David Sparks was born ca. 1847. He married Sarah Elizabeth Evans on February 24, 1868, in Johnson County, Kentucky. His brother, Robert Sparks, was a witness to the ceremony. Sarah Elizabeth had been born in February 1841 in Virginia. She and David had no children. David died prior to 1880.
1.2.1.2.1.8.13.6 Nicholas Sparks, Jr. was born in May 1848. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Martha J. Williams on May 12, 1877, in Johnson County. She had been born in June 1848 in Russell County, Virginia. She and Nicholas had no children. She apparently died ca. 1905. Nicholas Sparks, Jr. married (second) Katherine Colwell on December 18, 1906, in Johnson County. He was 58 years of age and Katherine was aged 17. They had eight children. Nicholas died in 1924 in Scioto County, Ohio.
