SPARKS FAMILIES APPEARING
ON THE 1800 CENSUS OF MARYLAND
(Editor's Note: A record of the Sparks families appearing on the 1790 census of Maryland was published in the March 1953 issue of the Quarterly, Whole No. 1. Here we give a record of Sparks families or households appearing on the 1800 census of Maryland. Sparkses were found in the counties of Caroline, Kent, and Queen Annes. No households were listed as headed by persons named Sparks in the following counties: Alleghany, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Montgomery, Prince Georges, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, Worchester, or the City of Baltimore. The 1800 census for Baltimore County is not available.
In the 1800 census, the name of the head of each household is given. The entire household, including the head, is then enumerated by sex and age groups. Ordinarily we may assume that the head of the household, when the name is that of a man, is the oldest male enumerated and the oldest female is his wife. If a woman is named as the head, we can almost always assume that she is a widow and is the oldest female enumerated. The other members of the household are usually the head's children. If, however, parents, other relatives, friends, or hired men and women were living in the household, they, too, were enumerated. Because of this, we can never be certain of the relationship of the individuals enumerated. The number in parentheses following each name is the page number on the census. These often indicate how closely one household lived to another, although in some instances (as in Queen Annes County) the census taker rearranged the entries according to the alphabet. No distinction has been made here between the spelling Sparks and Sparkes.)
