SPARKS FAMILIES LISTED ON THE 1830 CENSUS OF OHIO

Late in the 1700's, settlers began migrating to the area that became the state of Ohio in 1803. Prior to about 1830, nearly all of them came from the eastern seaboard, but after that date large numbers began coming from Germany and Ireland. New Englanders settled the north-eastern part of the state, while southern Ohio was settled largely by people from Virginia and Kentucky. The state grew rapidly. In 1810, Ohio was 13th in size, but by 1820 it was 5th, and by 1830 it had become the 4th most populous state.
Following is a list of the heads of families named Sparks who were listed on the 1830 census. Prior to 1850, only the head of each household was actually named by the Federal census taker. The members of the household, including the head, were then enumerated by sex and age groups opposite his name. Usually the head of the household can be identified in the enumeration as the oldest male and the oldest female was usually his wife. The younger members were usually their children. But there were many exceptions. The genealogist must realize that if in-laws, nephews and nieces, hired men and women, etc., were living with a family at the time the census was taken, they too were enumerated. It should also be kept in mind that the bread-winner was considered to be the head of the household, who was not always the oldest male.
