PERSONS NAMED SPARKS LIVING IN LOUISIANA IN 1850
Here we continue to publish a record of persons named Sparks (including Spark and Sparkes) appearing on the 1850 census of the United States. The area that comprises Louisiana today was owned by France, Spain, and England before it became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In 1804, a portion of the Louisiana Purchase was designated the Territory of Orleans and was divided into parishes rather than counties. In 1812, it was organized as a state, and in the same year the so-called "independent State of West Florida" east of the Pearl River was added to give the state its present boundaries.
The largest percentage of Louisiana's population trace their ancestry to the early French settlers, followed by the Spanish. Many of those with English ancestry go back to families who were living in the Atlantic states at the time of the American Revolution who wished to remain true to the Mother Country. They had moved to what became Louisiana as Loyalists.
The first census of Louisiana was taken in 1810 and returned a population of 76,556. by the 1850, the state's population had reached 500,000. As will be seen in the following pages, those families named Sparks living in Louisiana in 1850 had come largely from Georgia, some by way of Mississippi. One had come from North Carolina and one from South Carolina.
While in 1850 there were seven Sparks households, plus four other males named Sparks who were living with other families (one in a rooming house), there had been ten Sparks households in 1840 according to the census of that year. (For a record of Sparkses in Louisiana in 1840, see the Quarterly of September 1977, Whole No. 99, page 1930.)
When we published the record of Sparkses listed on the 1850 census of Missouri (see the Quarterly of March 1985, Whole No. 129, pp.2712-23), we gave a rather detailed explanation regarding the value of the 1850 census for genealogical research. We shall not repeat that here, noting only that it was in 1850 that each member of each household was, for the first time, recorded by name, age, sex, color, and place of birth (usually only the state or country). The occupation of the head of the household as well as that of other adult males was usually given, along with the value of real estate owned.
We believe that all persons named Sparks (including Spark and Sparkes) given on the 1850 census of Louisiana have been found. Where persons with names other than Sparks have been found living in a Sparks household, they have been included also. Where a Sparks has been found living with a family not named Sparks, we have transcribed that family as well. Because the color of everyone listed here was white, we have omitted that item from the listings. The precise date on which the census record was made and the name of the census taker have not been copied in every case.
