PERSONS NAMED SPARKS LIVING IN MISSOURI IN 1850
Here we continue our effort to publish a record of persons named Sparks (including Spark and Sparkes) appearing in the 1850 census of the United States. The following pages, through 2723, are devoted to the Sparkses in Missouri in 1850.
It is believed that the first American settlement in the part of the U.S. now comprising the state of Missouri was in 1787 when John Dodge established himself in what became Ste. Genevieve County. He was followed by Israel Dodge in 1790 and by Dr. Jesse Bryan a little later. John Moore settled in 1790 in what became Perry County. The area was then known as Upper Louisiana. In 1803, with the Louisiana Purchase, it became part of the United States. From 1805 until 1812, it was part of the Territory of Louisiana, but in 1812 it became a separate Territory of Missouri. It then claimed a population of 20,000, with most of those early settlers having come from Kentucky and Virginia.
Missouri achieved statehood in 1821 following the famous Missouri Compromise in Congress by which it was agreed that slavery could exist in the new state but nowhere else north of 36º 30', the southern boundary of Missouri. As a result of this compromise, there was great turmoil in the state during the Civil War in which neighbor fought neighbor in many a bloody battle.
As has been noted when we published census material in earlier issues of the Quarterly, the 1850 census is especially valuable to the genealogist and the family historian because, for the first time in a federal census, each member of each household was listed by name, with age, sex, and place of birth. Also shown was the occupation of many adult males along with that of an occasional adult female, and an estimate of the value of real estate owned.
In each case where a person named Sparks has been found, we have given the listing of all individuals appearing in that household, whether or not named Sparks. The page number cited is that of the page on which the entry appears in the manuscript volume containing that particular county. These original volumes are preserved in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
The two numbers given opposite the name of the head of each household are those that were supplied by the census taker. The first is the number he assigned, beginning with number 1, to the house or other structure (such as hotel or rooming house) in which one or more households were living. The second number was supposed to represent the particular family, in the order in which the census taker did his interviewing. These numbers can provide useful tools in speculating on how near two families lived to each other. For example, in Centre Township, Buchanan County, we know from these numbers that W. B. Thompson, the census taker, went directly from the household headed by John Sparks, Jr. (1029 -1032) to that of John Sparks, Sr. (1030 -1033), and then to the family of Isaac Sparks (1031-1034). We can be quite sure that these three Sparks families lived on adjoining farms and that they were probably closely related.
We must remember that census records contain errors. Many individuals, and even entire families, were missed by the census taker, and occasionally they were recorded twice. While the census taker was expected to interview the head of each household, he often obtained his information from whomever happened to be home. People were not as certain of their own ages in 1850 as we tend to be today, and whoever answered the census taker's questions may have had to guess regarding both ages and places of birth of other family members. When recording children's names, the census taker often wrote what he thought he heard, and neither his spelling nor his handwriting was always as perfect as we could wish. (Where there are uncertainties in handwriting in the record that follows, we have placed question marks.)
It should also be kept in mind that family relationships are not specified on the 1850 census. Without other supporting records, we cannot be positive, for example, that the seven children listed in the household of William Sparks, age 44, in Washington Township, Buchanan County, were necessarily his children. Note also that the female listed as Polly, age 23, could have been William's daughter as well as his wife. If she was his wife, and the ages given are correct, she could not, of course, have been the mother of Sally Sparks, age 14. (Polly would have been only 9 when Sally was born.) Perhaps Polly (which was probably a nickname for Mary) was a second wife of William Sparks and the mother of only the youngest children. There is no harm in hypothesizing on relationships such as this - - we must just be careful that we do not state assumptions as facts.
