John Patton is a younger brother of Neely Patton. Mary is his second wife; his first wife was Ann. Maiden name of both wives is unknown.

The high value of the real estate of James N. Stephens can be explained at least in part by deeds found in Coffee County, when the widow of Thomas Patton and Neely Patton and other sons of Thomas sold the Patton lands to James Stephens.

Aunt Sarah's record, the estate record of Neely S. Patton, and the above census records are the only 'proof' to date of the parentage of Melissa (Patton) Sparks. They are strong circumstantial evidence, and since the courthouses at Shelbyville, Bedford County, and Manchester, Coffee County, Tennessee, have suffered the same fate as that of Gilmer, Texas, it seems doubtful if additional records exist.

In the December 1966 issue of ANSEARCHIN' NEWS, the quarterly published by the Tennessee Genealogical Society, appeared another of my queries on the Patton family. Six months later, a genealogist friend handed this magazine to Robert R. Robinson, Jr., to see if he found anything of interest therein. All genealogical searchers will appreciate his excitement to find my query with the exact names for which he was searching, and my equal excitement, after so many years and numerous queries, when he contacted me! Since that day in June 1967 we have shared whatever either of us has found on Neely S. Patton - - his ancestors and his descendants. The following record is the result of our mutual research, and will complete our information on the ancestors of MELISSA (PATTON) SPARKS.

In the Library of the University of North Carolina is the autobiography of James Patton, the first of this family to come to this country. He states that he was born in the North of Ireland, County of Derry and Parish of Tamlacht. His father died in 1770, but we do not know his name nor the name of his mother, who came to Pennsylvania in 1790 and died in Asheville, North Carolina. To date we have been uable to learn when she died, but from the record left by James we believe her death occurred after 1814. Eight sons and two daughters were born in Ireland to this Patton couple, and all but the son Neely came to Philadelphia after their brother James had paved the way. Neely is said to have been an East Indian adventurer, an employee of the East India Tea Company, and to have lived in London, England, and raised a family there.

The oldest son in this family in Ireland was Thomas Patton, born in Ireland in 1751, married there ca. 1780, Jane Shaw, and came with their three young children to Philadelphia in the summer of 1791. In 1793 they settled in Wilkes County, N.C., where they remained until sometime after 1806, when they moved to Tennessee, as they were living in Bedford County in 1812 as proved by the Tax List.

Thomas Patton died 6 October 1815 at the age of 64 and was buried in the Patton Cemetery on his original property in what was then Bedford County, Tennessee, but in that portion taken into Coffee County when it was formed in 1836. Jane (Shaw) Patton was born in 1762 in County Derry, Ireland, and died January 16, 1848 in the 86th year of her age. Both of their gravestones were copied by me in April 1968 in this cemetery, now known by local residents as Cheatham Springs Cemetery. It is located near Noah, Tennessee.

The eldest child of Thomas and Jane (Shaw) Patton was Neely S. Patton, born in 1782 in Ireland, died in 1851 in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. He married on 26 April 1806 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, Elizabeth Vannoy, as proved by the records of that county on file at Wilkesboro. The bondsman was Joseph Patton (Neely's uncle), and the witness was Jno. Jones, D.C.C. Her ancestry is found in two books by James W. Hook: 'Capt. James Hook of Greene Co., Pa.' published in 1951, and 'George Michal Eller & Descendants' published in 1957.

Elizabeth Vannoy was born 4 March 1786, probably in Wilkes County, North Carolina. She died September 10, 1846. If she was buried in the Patton Cemetery at Noah, her gravestone has not survived. I have hunted many cemeteries in that portion of Tennessee, but have not located her grave. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Vannoy and his wife, Elizabeth Ray. Nathaniel Vannoy served as Sergeant Major in the Regiment of Col. Benjamin Cleveland in the Revolutionary War and was present at the Battle of Kings Mountain. He also was deputy sheriff of Wilkes County, N.C., during the war. He was of the fourth generation of the Vannoy family in this country. They were Huguenots, said to have fled France to Holland and from there to England during the reign of Charles I (p. 139, Hook), and to have settled on Staten Island, NY, prior to 1700.

The 'History of Coffee County, Tennessee' published in 1936 states on page 12 that 'one of the first settlements was made on Noah' s Fork of Duck River in the neighborhood of the site of the village of Noah, in the Third Civil District of the County, by Daniel, John, and Neeley Patton, brothers.... Just when and where these pioneers came is not definitely known, though the date is supposed to be ca. 1800, as other settlers coming seven or eight years later found them here with surroundings indicating a domicile of several years' duration.'

Mr. Robinson and I are continuing our search to fill in the voids not only in the family of Neely Patton and his father, Thomas Patton, but also for the families of the seven brothers and two sisters of Thomas Patton.

It has been my pleasure to prepare this article to add to the records of TRE SPARKS FAMILY ASSOCIATION, and Mr. Robinson was most kind to give me his unqualified permission to include data which he has found in our joint search during the past year. When I was in Coffee County, Tennessee, in April 1968, I found the granddaughter of Elizabeth Jane Patton Stephens still living there. Perhaps some member of your Association will know of a descendant of Sally Patton Johnson, Mary Patton Chambers, William Patton, or Susan Adelaid Patton Clark-Page, enabling us to secure another link in this chain. SPARKS FAMILIES LISTED ON THE 1850 CENSUS OF TENNESSEE

Some months ago, Mrs. Irene D. Spencer of Whittier, California, provided the Association with a copy of an index listing the persons named Sparks appearing on the 1850 census of Tennessee. She had obtained this report from byron Sistler & Associates, 1805 Madison St., Evanston, Illinois (60202), who have indexed this entire census. Through the years, we had accumulated many of the Sparks records from the 1850 census of Tennessee, and, with the index supplied by Mrs. Spencer, Dr. Paul E. Sparks, the Association's President, was able to identify families for whom we lacked a complete record. For a very reasonable fee, Sistler & Associates supplied the missing data arranged as they appear on the actual census. We are now able to present what we believe to be an accurate transcription of all the Sparks families, and households where Sparkses were included, when the 1850 census was taken in the state of Tennessee.

In previous issues of the Quarterly, we have published Sparks records from earlier Federal census records for Tennessee. In the the September 1955 issue, Whole No. 11, pp. 89-92 we published a record of the Sparks families listed on the 1820 and 1830 censuses.

In the issue for the March 1961, Whole No. 33, pp. 546-548 we published a record of the Sparks families listed on the 1840 census.

In those three censuses, only the head of the household was named - - the other members were simply enumerated by sex and age groups. The Federal census of 1850, like each 10-year census since that date, was planned to include the name of every free inhabitant, with place of birth, age, and sex. The individual's occupation (usually only for adult males) and the dollar value of his real estate were also given.

In 1850, Tennessee had the fifth largest population among the states - - a total of 1,002,717. The great majority of the population were natives of the state - - those who were not had largely migrated from the states east of Tennessee. There were 82 counties in 1850 (today there are 95), and individuals named Sparks were living in 34 of those counties. These were:

Like the population as a whole, the great majority of the 298 individuals named Sparks in Tennessee in 1850 were natives of the state. A total of 73 Sparkses gave their place of birth as a state other than Tennessee. North Carolina was the birth place of 26, Virginia was the birth place of 20, while 17 had been born in South Carolina. The only other states represented were: Maryland W., Alabama (2), Georgia (2), Kentucky (2), and Mississippi (1).

Census takers in 1850 were instructed to assign a number to each house and to each separate family. Most census takers appear to have made no distinction, assuming that everyone living in a house constituted one family. The numbers are, therefore, usually the same. The head of the household was listed first, this usually being the eldest male unless he were a hired man or an aged relative. If the first name was that of an adult male and a woman's name follows, in nearly every case she can be assumed to have been his wife. (Unfortunately, it was not until the 1880 census that provision was made to record the relationship of each member of the household.) If there were children living at home, they were usually listed next, in the order of their birth. Other relatives, hired hands, orphans that had been taken in, etc., were usually listed after the youngest child.

In each instance where a person named Sparks has been found on the 1850 census of Tennessee, we have listed the entire household of which he/she was a member. Likewise, we have included persons not named Sparks where they have been found living in a Sparks household. The page number in each case refers to the page of the manuscript volume in the National Archives containing that particular county or part thereof. The house number and the household or family number (usually the same) are given because the census taker assigned these as he progressed from one home to the next. These numbers may reveal how near to each other two families in the same district lived. If two Sparks families were living on adjoining farms or lots, we can usually assume a close family relationship. Following the name of each individual is his/her age in 1850, an indication whether male or female, and the place of birth. The occupation of adult males usually appears as the next item, followed by the value of their real estate, if any.

While census records constitute a major source for genealogical research, it must be remembered that they contain errors. Some families were missed entirely by the
census taker, while some individuals were omitted from households. In some cases, a young man or woman "working out" might be listed with their parents and also with
the household in which they were working, thus being counted twice. One member of
the household usually supplied the census taker with the information. This individual might guess at the ages and place of birth of other members of the household and, on occasion, might give wrong information intentionally. (Mrs. Abraham Lincoln's age was given on the 1860 census of Illinois as four years younger than she actually was.) The census taker sometimes misunderstood a name or guessed at the spelling, and his handwriting is sometimes difficult to decipher.

Despite these shortcomings, we are confident that this record of Sparkses in Tennessee in 1850 will be helpful to many of our members with Tennessee connections.
