(Editor's Note: This record of the descendants of 21.1.1.5 Robert Sparks (1777-1831) by Miss Helen White, who lives at 209 East Spruce Street, Shelbina, Missouri, was begun in the Quarterly of June 1967 (Whole No. 58) and was continued in the issues for the December 1967 (Whole No. 60) and the June 1968 (Whole No. 62). In those issues, Miss White traced the descendants of Robert's sons,

In this issue we complete Miss White's record of the children of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, with their descendants.)


21.1.1.5.8 ROBERT SPARKS, 1811-1872


21.1.1.5.8 Robert Sparks, was born in Henry County, Kentucky, on July 27, 1811. He moved to Missouri as a young man and on March 9, 1841, he was married in Monroe County, Missouri, near Old Clinton or Clapper Station, to Martha Pearcy. She was born in Kentucky on June 6, 1819, near Shelbyville. Robert Sparks was a farmer. He died in Monroe County, Missouri, on January 21, 1872, and his wife, Martha, died on July 31, 1892. Both were buried in the Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery, five miles south of Shelbina, Missouri. They were the parents of thirteen children:

21.1.1.5.8.1 Betsie Viotta Sparks, daughter of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on February 5, 1842, and died September 9, 1844. She is possibly buried in Old Clinton, now called Norfork.

21.1.1.5.8.2 John Richard Sparks, son of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on July 5, 1843, and died on August 15, 1844. He was possibly buried in Old Clinton.

21.1.1.5.8.3 William Henry Sparks, son of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on August 30, 1844, and died on October 5, 1934. In the family portrait on the cover he is shown on the bottom row at the viewer's far right. He married Margaret Brice, who was born either January or August 12, 1847, and died on May 20, 1920. They had no children, but reared two, Nora Ryan and another.

21.1.1.5.8.4 James Thomas Sparks, son of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on April 11, 1846, and died on August 15, 1846. He was possibly buried at Old Clinton.

21.1.1.5.8.5 Oliver Perry Sparks, son of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on November 7, 1847. He was a twin of Isabelle "Ibby" Ann. In the family portrait on the cover he is shown on the viewer's far left. He never married. He died on January 24, 1918, and was buried at Crooked Creek Cemetery.

21.1.1.5.8.6 Isabelle Ann Sparks (called "Ibby"], daughter of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born November 7, 1847. She was a twin of Oliver Perry Sparks. She never married and lived with her brothers, Oliver Perry and Albert. She died on August 18, 1927, and was buried at Crooked Creek Cemetery. In the family portrait on the cover she is shown second from the viewer's left.

21.1.1.5.8.7 Hugh Pearcy Sparks, son of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on February 6, 1850, and died in Shelbina, Missouri, on March 13, 1943; be was buried in the Shelbina cemetery. In the family portrait on the cover, he is shown second from the left (in the center) of the top row. He was married three times; all of his children were by his first wife, Adelaide Bebee, daughter of Parley Bebee, who was born a farm near Mendon, Michigan, on December 23, 1854, and died near Old Clinton, Missouri, on December 9, 1882, at the age of 27. She was buried in the Greenwood Methodist Cemetery, south-east of Shelbina. Hugh Pearcy Sparks married as his second wife, Jennie Sallee, who was born July 7, 1862, and died on July 11, 1901. She was buried at the Crooked Creek Cemetery. Her parents were O. P. and Mary Ann Sallee. Hugh Pearcy Sparks married as his third wife, Mrs. Anna M. (Hanger) Finney, who was born September 23, 1869, and died in Shelbina, Missouri, on March 5, 1944. She was buried in Shelbina, Missouri, Hugh Pearcy and his first wife, Adelaide (Bebee) Sparks, were the parents of three children:

21.1.1.5.8.7.1 Edith L. Sparks, daughter of Hugh P. and Adelaide (Bebee) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, MO., on September 25, 1879, and died on January 30, 1881. She was buried in the Greenwood Methodist Cemetery, southeast of Shelbina, Missouri.

21.1.1.5.8.7.2 Hughbert Sparks, son of Hugh P. and Adelaide (Bebee) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, MO, date unknown. We have no dates, or any knowledge of where he was buried, but it must be either Old Clinton or Greenwood cemetery. We found at Old Clinton, now called Norfork, at a cemetery on the north side of the road, a lot marked off with four corners of concrete, with the letter "5". There were several graves that were just marked with river stones.


21.1.1.5.8.7.3 ARTHUR LEE SPARKS

Born 1881, died 1960.

21.1.1.5.8.7.3 Arthur Lee Sparks, son of Hugh and Adelaide (Bebee) Sparks, was born on May 11, 1881, in Monroe County, Missouri, and died in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 19, 1960; he was buried in Shelbina, MO. He was married on September 14, 1904, to Julia Connely, who was born in Shelby County, MO., on July 26, 1882. She died in Kansas City, MO., on September 2, 1962. They had four children:

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.1 Richard C. Sparks, son of Arthur and Julia (Connely) Sparks, was born in Kansas City, MO., June 9, 1905, and died in Tucson, Arizona, January 4, 1936. He died of T.B. contracted from a roommate at college.

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2 Ellen Louise Sparks, daughter of Arthur and Julia (Connely) Sparks, was born in Kansas City, MO., on January 8, 1907; she married Fred W. Whitlock in St. Louis, MO., on September 16, 1929, who was born in El Paso, Texas, on January 14, 1904. They had four children:

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2.1 Fred Woodworth Whitlock, born November 15, 1930, married Betty Smoot in June 1956; she was born February 28, 1932. They have four children:

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2.2 Julianne Whitlock, born August 13, 1934; she married Robert Richey in November 195- ; he was born April 7, 1926. They have two children:

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2.2.1 Amy Marie Richey, born December 13, 1962; and
21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2.2.2 Sara Beth Richey, born June 9, 1966.

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2.3 Robert Sparks Whitlock, born April 8, 1939; he married Mrs. Evelyn Auer, who was born in Germany on November 11, 1940. She had a son, Peter Auer, born March 8, 1959.

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.2.4 Marie Louise Whitlock, born December 8, 1946, died June 22, 1963, in a private plane crash in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.3 Dorothy Sparks, daughter of Arthur and Julia (Comely) Sparks, was born in Kansas City, MO., on January 4, 1910. She was married in Florida on May 11, 1942, to Grover M. Angell, who was born February 20, 1893. They have three children:

21.1.1.5.8.7.3.3.1 Susan Angell, born March 12, 1943.
21.1.1.5.8.7.3.3.2 Donna Lee Angell, born November 5, 1944. She married John Gaskill on November 7, 1964; they have a daughter,

21.1.1.5.8.8 Eliza Jane Sparks, daughter of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on November 30, 1851, and died on March 4, 1913. In the family portrait on the cover, she is shown third from the viewer' s left. She was married on January 18, 1871, to Isaac Newton White, who was born August 4, 1844, and died on April 28, 1914. Newton White was a farmer in the Crooked Creek and Grandville neighborhood. They had six sons. The Whites were Baptists and are buried at Crooked Creek Cemetery. They were the parents of six children, all sons. The picture of this family, appearing of the following page, was taken on November 7, 1903.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1 Eugene Columbus White, son of Isaac Newton and Eliza Jane (Sparks) White, was born in Monroe County, MO., on October 17, 1873, and died south of Clarence on June 13, 1930. He was married on November 24, 1896, to Annie Laura Sears, born August 26, 1877, in Shelby County, and died in Shelbima on October 23, 1942. They were buried in Shelbina, MO. Gene White was a farmer and had seven children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.1 Harold Allen White, son of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born February 27, 1898. He married Jessie Ernestine Boling in Shelby County on March 4, 1921; she was born December 25, 1901. Harold is a farmer and lives south of Clarence, MO. They had two children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.1.1 Floyd Henry White, son of Harold A. and Jessie E. Thite, was born on December 7, 1921; he married Virginia Pearl Tyner on November 29, 1945; she was born October 24, 1921. They had six children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.2 Newton Sears White, son of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born December 7, 1899, and died February 6, 1952. He married Betty Thompson and they had one child. Newt worked for the American Telephone and Telegraph; he was buried in Shelbina. Their daughter was named Betty Ann White, born October 2, 1945; she married Bill Wehmeyer and lives in Boonville, MO.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.3 Rhoda Pearl White, daughter of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born June 8, 1901, and died on May 5, 1959; she was buried in Shelbina. She married Floyd William Moore on May 12, 1923; he was born September 8, 1900. They had no children.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.4 Lotus Virginia White, daughter of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born June 27, 1902. She married Charles Brown Moore on April 12, 1925; he was born April 22, 1903. They own the Shelbina Hatchery. They reared a niece of Charles B. Moore named Loyce V. Pickett, called "Peg', who was born August 30, 1922 and married Dwight Karns.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.5 Christie Margaret White, daughter of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born April 19, 1905; she married Chester Lewis Ertel on October 1, 1927; he was born March 15, 1904. They have two sons:

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.5.1 John Lewisc, born June 13, 1928; he married Billie Rhinehart on December 27, 1952; she was born June 12, 1930. They live in Cincinnati, Ohio, and have three children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.5.1.2 Laura Jane Ertel, born June 17, 1960; and

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.5.2 Edward Eugene Ertel, born July 30, 1932; he married Janice Kay Gibson on May 2, 1953; she was born August 25, 1932. They have two children and live in Blytheville, Ark.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.5.2.1 Debra Kay Ertel, born January 23, 1955; and
21.1.1.5.8.8.1.5.2.2 Mark Edward Ertel born February 28, 1958.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.6 Mary Lucille White, daughter of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born July 7, 1906; she married Charley Martin in 1936. She is a bookkeeper.

21.1.1.5.8.8.1.7 Walter Ercil White, son of Eugene and Annie (Sears) White, was born on August 26, 1907; he married Ruth Elizabeth Rash on June 17, 1933; she was born September 30, 1911. They live in Moberly, Missouri.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2 Robert Lewis White, son of Isaac Newton and Eliza Jane (Sparks) White, was born in Monroe County, MO., on September 8, 1875; he died in Fowler, Colorado, on November 19, 1938. He married Bessie M. Maupin on June 21, 1903; she was born March 11, 1875, and died November 18, 1918. They had two children. Robert later married Laura Webdell; they were divorced a few years later, Laura was born May 18, 1867, and died December 26, 1951. Robert and Bessie were buried in Fowler, Colo., and Laura was buried at Oak Ridge, south of Lentner, MO.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.1 Pauline White, daughter of Robert L. and Bessie M. (Maupin) White, was born March 29, 1904. She married Loys Green on January 2, 1933; he was born August 2, 1902. Pauline is a school teacher and principal of a school, first in Fowler, now in Greeley, Cob. They have three children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.1.1 Edward Green, born July 31, 1934; married Sharon Blair on June 14, 1959; she was born June 19, 1938. He is a teacher, coaches basketball, in Colorado Springs, Col. They have two children, the eldest of whom is Brenda Sue Green , born October 29, 1963.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.1.2 Shirley Green, born September 10, 1936; married Dennis T. Walker on July 1, 1960; he was born September 30, 1938. They are divorced. They had one child, Cheryl Lynn, born August 31, 1962.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.1.3 Charlotte Green, born September 19, 1937; she married Delbert Lee Gossline on June 28, 1958; he was born September 15, 1931. They live in Greeley, Col. "Deb" is a certified public accountant in Greeley. They have two adopted children, David Lee Gossline, born September 26, 1963, and a girl whose named is believed to be Nancy Gossline, born in 1966.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2 Marion White (called "Bob"], son of Robert L. and Bessie M. (Maupin) White, was born July 14, 1906, in Shelbina, MO. He married Martha Ingersol on June 7, 1927; she was born August 12, 1906, in Colorado, and died December 30, 1930, in Brush, Col. They had two daughters. On September 16, 1935, he married (second) Grace McCoy, born May 11, 1907, and died October 5, 1944, in Bishop, California. They had three girls. The third marriage took place July 19, 1945, to Marion Peterson, who was born December 7, 1916. She had a son when they married and they now have one son. They live in Bishop, California., and Bob works at a Chevrolet garage.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.1 Phyllis White was born in Colorado on March 16, 1928. She married Bert Clark on May 30, 1946; he was born September 10, 1924. They had four children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.1.1 Terry Clark, born September 25, 1948;
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.1.2 Larry Clark, born March 8, 1950;
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.1.3 Bert Clark, born July 25, 1956, died July 3, 1961; and
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.1.4 Glenn Clark, born 0ct. 28, 1958.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.2 Patricia White was born 6 February 1930, in Col. She married Gene Neilan on February 9, 1948; he was born September 16, 1927. They had three children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.2.1 Gary Neilan born May 8, 1951;
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.2.2 Greg Neilan, born May 30, 1955; and
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.2.3 Scott Neilan, born June 20, 1960, died June 22, 1960.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.3 Jacqueline ["Jackie"] White was born in California on June 26, 1938. She married Edward Neilan in California on June 26, 1938. He was born July 21, 1934. They have three children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.3.1 Dennie Neilan, born July 29, 1957;
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.3.2 Ronney Neilan, born May 28, 1959; and
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.3.3 Laurie Neilan born April 4, 1961.

21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.4 Barbara White was born June 20, 1940. She married in California on January 14, 1967. 21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.5 Marilyn White was born August 22, 1942.
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.6 Mike Parker, son of Marion (Parker) White, born March 19, 1939.
21.1.1.5.8.8.2.2.7 Robert William ["Bobby"] White, son of "Bob" and Marion White, born September 16, 1949, in Bishop, California.

21.1.1.5.8.8.3 Charles Howe White, son of Isaac Newton and Eliza Jane (Sparks) White, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on February 22, 1879, and died south of Clarence, MO., on March 10, 1932. He did not marry, but lived with Walter and they farmed all of their lives. Charles is buried at Crooked Creek Baptist Cemetery.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4 Henry Harrison White, son of Isaac Newton and Eliza Jane (Sparks) White, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on July 29, 1882; he died at his home in Shelbina, Missouri, on May 26, 1962. On June 28, 1908, he was married in Clarence, MO., to Rose Bell Noel, who was born south of Clarence on June 12, 1880. Henry was buried in the Shelbina cemetery. He was a farmer, working with two of his brothers, Walter and Charley, before he married. Then he worked on a dray, back to farming, then worked at the Farmers Exchange. Henry had a sunstroke in August 1932 and was never able to work after that, what with heart trouble and hardening of the arteries. Rose, besides rearing seven children, has pieced and quilted quilts all of her life. She will soon be eighty- nine and still quilts every day. Besides the quilts that have already been worn out, we still have about 35 quilts of our own. She is a Baptist by faith.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.1 Mildred Bernice White, daughter of Henry H. and Rose (Noel) White, was born south of Clarence on March 27, 1910. She worked for ten years in the office of Dr. J. A. Furnish, then went to St. Louis and took nurses' training at Barnes Hospital. She is now working in the admitting office at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.2 Anna Margaret White, daughter of Henry H. and Rose (Noel) White, was born in Shelbina, MO., on August 15, 1911. She was Chief Operator and Cashier of the telephone company until she married Lester Cecil Farley on June 2, 1945; he was born January 28, 1912. Lester was part-owner of Griggs & Farley Chevrolet Garage. He died on June 27, 1958, of heart trouble caused from polio. They had one son, Robert C. Farley, born March 21, 1946; he married January 14, 1967, Michelene Goodnight, born September 23, 1946.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.3 Eliza Madeline White, daughter of Henry and Rose (Noel) White, was born in Shelbina, MO., on March 12, 1913. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.4 Mary Frances White, daughter of Henry and Rose (Noel) White, was born in Shelbina, MO., on April 16, 1915. She also lives in St. Louis.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.5 Helen Marie White, daughter of Henry and Rose (Noel) White, was born August 30, 1917, on the Ed Gillispie farm south-east of Shelbina, MO., in the Greenwood neighborhood. She is a Cosmetologist, having taken her schooling in St. Louis where she worked for eight years before coming back to Shelbina. She owns her own shop in Shelbina. (Miss White is the compiler of this record of the descendants of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks.)

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.6 Katherine Louise White, daughter of Henry and Rose (Noel) White, was born October 26, 1919, on the Ed Gillispie farm southeast of Shelbina, MO., in the Greenwood neighborhood. She lives in St. Louis, MO.

21.1.1.5.8.8.4.7 Henry Noel White, son of Henry and Rose (Noel) White, was born in Shelbina, MO., on December 29, 1922, in what was the Old Clark place. He was married on September 20, 1947, to Marcella Holzem in St. Louis, MO. He works for Civil Service in St. Louis; they have five children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.5 Walter Bland White, son of Isaac Newton and Eliza Jane (Sparks) White, was born in Monroe County, MO., on January 25, 1886; he died In Clarence, MO., on December 27, 1960. He was married on April 18, 1912, to Anna Ruth Clutter, who was born July 12, 1887, south of Clarence, MO. Walter was a farmer and they had three children:

21.1.1.5.8.8.5.1 Nina White, daughter of Walter B. and Anna R. (Clutter) White, was born in Shelby County, MO., on March 16, 1913, and died on August 6, 1916. She was buried in the Union Cemetery, south of Clarence, MO.

21.1.1.5.8.8.5.2 Charles Lyle White, son of Walter B. and Anna R. (Clutter) White, was born in Shelby County, MO., on December 21, 1915. He married Louise Hayden on May 24, 1941; she was born September 29, 1921. They had two sons:

21.1.1.5.8.8.5.2.1 Ronald Lyle White, born in Shelby County, MO., on December 16, 1945; and 21.1.1.5.8.8.5.2.2 Randal Lynn White, born in Shelby County, MO., on June 1, 1950.

21.1.1.5.8.8.5.3 Howard Lynn White, son of Walter B. and Anna R. (Clutter) White, was born in Shelby County, MO., on May 2, 1919, and died on December 16, 1957. He was buried at Clarence, MO.

21.1.1.5.8.8.6 Jessie Lee White, son of Isaac Newton and Eliza Jane (Sparks) White, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on January 27, 1892. He is not shown in the family picture on the cover. He married Caroline Eliza Howe who was born in Canada on February 7, 1860. (She had previously been married to FNU Swift.) She died on July 27, 1946. After Samuel died, she married FNU Whitby. They are all buried in Clarence Cemetery. Samuel and Caroline had one son, Ernest Lewis Sparks.

21.1.1.5.8.9.1 Ernest Lewis Sparks, son of Samuel and Caroline (Howe) Sparks, was born in Shelby County, Missouri, on August 6, 1888, and died in a hospital in Quincy, Illinois, on October 8, 1966. He was married in Hannibal, MO., on October 18, 1911, to Harriet Alberta Williams, who was born August 22, 1889, and died in Hannibal Hospital on July 9, 1958. They were both buried in Hannibal. Lewis was publisher of the Hannibal Courier-Post. They had four children:

She was married on March 8, 1934, to Arvel Robert Mefford, and they had two children. He was killed in France while in service on September 9, 1944. Alberta married again on December 30, 1948, Edward A. Kiethey, who was born May 9, 1944. They have one child.

Harry was an ensign in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was assigned to the Pacific Fleet as a fighter pilot. He was killed during advance training at Miami, Florida. He was buried in the Grandview Cemetery in Hannibal, Missouri.

21.1.1.5.8.10 Albert Lewis Sparks, son of Robert and Martha (Pearcy) Sparks, was born in Monroe County, Missouri, on March 10, 1855, and died on February 10, 1938. He never married and was buried in the Crooked Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. He is at the far left, top row, in the family portrait.

She had been reared by William Henry and Margaret (Brice) Sparks. She was born September 4, 1869, and died October 8, 1946. George Lee Sparks died in Vandalia, Missouri, or January 6, 1941. Both were buried in Vandalia, Missouri. They had eight children:

21.1.1.5.9 Oliver Towles Sparks, son of Robert and Isabelle (Ford) Sparks, was born in Henry County, Kentucky, on September 22, 1813. He was married in Henry County to Elizabeth Locklin, Jr., in 1833. The marriage bond is dated December 3, 1833, and they were probably married shortly thereafter. Oliver Towles Sparks was in Daviess County, Kentucky, as early as 1838 where he purchased land from Joshua and Elizabeth Miller on March 24, 1838. He died there in 1863. He made his will on March 14, 1863, and it was probated on April 4, 1863. He left all of his property to his wife, Elizabeth. Our Information on this family is limited to what we have been able to glean from census and other official records. We believe that Oliver Towles and Elizabeth (Locklin) Sparks were the parents of the following children:

She was buried in Shelbina. She was married on January 25, 1837, in Kentucky to Isaac Perry McConnell. They had two children, James William McConnell and Obe McConnell.
