VERMONT CENSUS RECORDS
Although Vermont did not enter the Union until 1791, as the 14th state, it was included in the first census taken of the nation in 1790. As was noted in the Quarterly of June 1953, Whole No. 2, p. 10), there were two Sparks households in Vermont in 1790. One was headed by Stephen Sparks of the town of Leicester in Addison County; besides himself, according to that census, there were 3 males under 16 living in the household, along with 3 females. (The ages of females were not shown on the 1790 census.) The other was Ebenezer Sparks in Windham County, town of Wardsborough (shown as "Ebenr. Sparks" on the census); besides himself there were 4 males in his household, all under 16, along with 4 females.
As will be seen from the following census records (for 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840), these two families continued to appear in their respective counties in Vermont for the next half-century. Information regarding Stephen Sparks appears in the Quarterly of March 1987 (Whole No. 137, page 3029). Information on Ebenezer Sparks, whose widow, Margaret, applied for a pension in 1844 based on his service in the American Revolution, appeared in the Quarterly of March 1957, Vol. V, No. 1, Whole No. 17, pp. 193-203.
A record of persons named Sparks (Sparkes and Spark) found on the 1850 census of Vermont appeared in the Quarterly of June 1981 (Whole No. 114, pp. 2314-16).
