SPARKS FAMILIES LISTED ON THE 1850 CENSUS OF OHIO
(Editor's Note:
the December 1966 issue of the Quarterly (Whole No. 56, pp. 1034-36) contained a record of families named Sparks who were listed on the 1820 census of Ohio.
the September 1966 issue (Whole No. 55, pp. 1013-16) contained the record of Sparks families on the 1830 census.
the December 1976 issue (Whole No. 92, pp. 1776-81) had a listing of the Sparkses on the 1840 census.
The federal census of Ohio taken in 1810 was destroyed when the British burned Washington in 1814. Following is a record of the Sparkses listed on the 1850 census.
Ohio became the seventeenth state in the Union in 1803, and by 1850 all but one (Noble) of her 88 counties had been formed. When the 1850 census was taken, persons named Sparks lived in 32 of these counties. Counties where there were no Sparkses listed were: Allen, Ashland, Astabula, Athens, Auglaize, Belmont, Clermont, Columbiana, Coshocton, Defiance, Erie, Franklin, Gallia, Geauga, Greene, Guernsey, Hancock, Hardin, Harrison, Henry, Hocking, Jackson, Jefferson, Knox, Lake, Lawrence, Lorain, Lucas, Madison, Mahoning, Marion, Medina, Meigs, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Morrow, Paulding, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Portage, Preble, Putnam, Scioto, Shelby, Summit, Union, Van Wert, Vinton, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Williams, and Wood.
In the following list, the page number refers to the page in the volume containing the particular county named. The two numbers given below the page number are those supplied by the census taker. The first was the house number; the second was the family number. These two numbers are often the same, but when two families lived in the same house, the sequences would thereafter be different. These numbers are useful to the genealogist because one can frequently judge how near one family lived to another by comparing the numbers. (Thus, in Clark County we know that the families of Richard Sparks (67-67), Ephraim Sparks (68-68), and Thomas Sparks (69-69) lived very near each other.) Opposite each person's name is given his age, then whether male or female, and the state in which he was born. Where the census taker listed occupation and value of real estate owned, this information is also given.
It should be kept in mind that it was not uncommon for the census taker to make an error. He would usually obtain his information from whomever happened to be at home on the day he called, and that individual might, for example, guess at the ages of the members of the household.
