QUERY-- MINA (SPARKS) AUSTIN, 1849-1883
Carol R. Austin (Mrs. Charles W.), Garden Grove, California (92644) desires information on an ancestor of her husband's, MINA SPARKS. She was born August 7, 1849, probably in Canada. The names of her parents are not known, but it is known that the family moved to Kansas at an early day and settled at Ellsworth in Ellsworth County. See also, the Quarterly (September, 1975, Whole No. 91, page 1771)
60.8.4.1.3.2.3 MINA SPARKS married John Orlando Austin, as his second wife, on November 23, 1868 (place not known). (In an undated newspaper clipping, Mina's name appears as Minnie, but it is believed that Mina was the correct spelling.) She died at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Wilford, on August 23, 1883. Her death probably occurred in Kansas, but possibly in Colorado. Her children were:
60.8.4.1.3.2.3.1 Freddie Austin, born November 14, 1869, died August 28, 1870.
60.8.4.1.3.2.3.2 Addie Maud Austin, born February 12, 1871, died October 17, 1879.
60.8.4.1.3.2.3.3 Annie Richmond Austin, born June 15, 1873, died October 19, 1874.
60.8.4.1.3.2.3.4 Charles Peck Austin, born June 9, 1875, in Detroit, Michigan; he married Florence Homes, daughter of Philip Henry and Ann E. (Tobey) Holmes on February 15, 1898, in Gardner, Kennebec County, Maine. He died on January 19, 1948, in New York.
A scrapbook in the family has references to mining stock in Buena Vista, Colorado, property lost in a Denver flood, and pictures of John O. Austin and Chief Sitting Bull; there is also a picture taken in Coffeyville, Kansas, of some Indians on their way to Washington to sign a peace treaty. Can anyone identify members of this family?
